I either use the tweezers or a pin.

Q: How does the pen hold the diamonds? With wax?

You just poke the tip of the pen into the wax. Then, you pick the diamonds up with the tip of the pen- the wax is just sticky enough to grab the diamond. Then you push the diamond onto the canvas and repeat the process. No need to poke the pen into the wax with every stone because it uses very little wax.
