The Bubble Boy

'The Bubble Boy' is a mood-changing story. During the course of the book there are many different characters. It is a good book for someone who doesn't enjoy reading because it is exciting and difficult to stop once you start! If you enjoy stories with some sad parts, I recommend it for you. However, if you don't enjoy tense but sad stories, choose a different book! In the story there is a character called Amril. He is a bubbly character who is a bit of a dreamer. The main character is called Joe. this story shows how lucky we are to be able to go outside on adventures and just how lucky we are to be healthy. The Bubble Boy is a really good book and I highly recommend it to you.

Beautifully written
This book is beautiful written, incredibly charming, funny, heart breaking and also incredibly hopeful. It will also make you hold your breath wondering what's going to happen and gasp in amazement. It made me cry in parts because some of the characters are so moving. I am teacher. Haven't used this in class yet but I can't imagine year 5 and 6 children not absolutely loving it. Brilliant story telling too. One of my best of many reads over the last year. Am now going to buy all of Stew Foster's books. @gibbins_kim

Unusual and compelling take on a a very different sort of life
This book is refreshing because it is so different to what is on offer for this age group. I would say it is best suited to 9 - 12 year olds. Almost entirely set in one hospital room as the main character, Joe, is room bound due to health, the author skilfully engages us in Joe's life, worries, hopes and fears. The ending is not entirely happy but I think some children will appreciate this, as I frequently hear a "why does everything have a happy ending" lament in school.

Such a moving story
I loved it. It's sad and wonderful and fun and beautiful, sometimes all at once. It makes you think, and feel. Great book.

MUST READ
Written by Abigail, aged 10This book is a life-affirming story of a boy written with a supersized dream who longs for a chance to be brave. This is a book with bravery, curiosity and hopes to be shared beyond the world. I liked this book because it's my type of book - with a little sadness and a gripping ending! The main character Joe has a sad disease that will not allow him to go outside but that doesn't stop him allowing a new person into his life with life-changing effects! How amazing it is that this is true to life for some children. A must read!

This book is so amazing and emotional
This book made me cry. No other book I have ever read (apart from Harry potter) has made me cry. It is so amazing and emotional and wonderful and I wish this was a series because I would get the whole series and read them in one day.The "bubble boy" (joe) is an inspirational person who is stuck in a bubble like hospital room, which he cannot leave. But he tries and tried and a nurse who many people think crazy changes that.....There is also another bubble boy called Henry who joe is friends with but something shocking happens. Please read this book

Not all superheroes wear capes...
MG fiction age 9+ emotion, empathy, friendship.Stewart Foster has a gift for creating characters so real you believe in them, root for them, know them as friends and won't want to leave them.Joe is one such friend. His medical condition confines him to a hospital room and his only regular visitor is his sister, Beth. He has a wonderful nurse Greg who is kind, caring and does a great job of looking after Joe.And then there is Amir... you will be intrigued by him and you'll want to get to know him too.The prospect of a story set (almost) entirely in a hospital room may not seem like something that would take you anywhere, but in fact Joe's journey leads to the very powerful realisation that it is the simple things in life that matter the most: seeing the stars in the sky, watching the sunrise, finding friendship. When you've read the last page you'll want to go back to the beginning and start all over again... simply because you'll miss Joe's voice in your head.

A heartwarming read
I really liked this - it has a likeable protagonist with whom we can all identify with, even though the subject matter is unfamiliar. The threads of friendship and perseverance run throughout. A great novel for confident readers to explore loss, family and life.

He and I enjoyed the book immensely
I was looking for a book that might, in a non-literal way, speak to my son's experience. He is nonverbal and uses a wheelchair. He is not literally in a bubble but.... He and I enjoyed the book immensely. The scene between Joe and Amir made me appreciate how much of the sensual world my son takes in and responds to intensely.Reading it to him made me appreciate the author's ability to speak to our lives without intending to. That is, afterall, the definition of art.

A review
It was an interesting book with twists and turns some heartwrenching and some happy and some parts you just feel sympathy as Joe bathes in his boredom
