Cowboys and androids
A three dvd box set containing all ten episodes of the first season of Westworld. This is based on the old movie Starring Yul Brynner as an android cowboy in a theme park who gains sentience. But it's an entirely fresh take on the concept, so both of them stand apart. It is an eighteen certificate dvd, as it contains possibly even more strong language, violence and adult moments and nudity than any season of Game of Thrones does. So if that's going to bother you, steer clear. It is not really gratuitous though. The first nine episodes run for just under an hour each. And the season finale goes to seventy five mins [approx.].Westworld is a place that looks like the Wild West. Has cowboys and soldiers and indians and saloon girls. But they're all androids. Known as hosts, they are there for the entertainment of visitors, who can do whatever they want. There are many storylines - known as narratives - they can get into. But some of the hosts are starting to behave oddly. Park creator Dr. Ford [Anthony Hopkins] is on the verge of being pushed out by the board of directors. Nobody knows what happened to Arnold, his old partner. Then there's the man in black [Ed Harris]. Who is on a quest. To find a secret at the heart of the park..... This is one of those event tv shows, the kind that they say you talk about around the office watercooler. Unlike some of those which dangle questions from the off and never fully answer everything, this does sort itself all out over the course of the season, the outcome of which is to leave it all in a very different place and direction for year two.And this is quite marvellously scripted, because by the time you get to the end of the season, you will have had many delightful surprises along the way, which make you reappraise what came before. And it also is one of those shows that considers the big questions of existence and consciousness, making you think about them as you go along.Superbly acted as well, with some very sympathetic characters, and some three dimensional villains, it's event television that is totally worth the effort of getting into. And five stars out of five. The dvds have the following language and subtitle options:Languages: English, French.Subtitles: English, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French,. Norwegian, Swedish.Extras:Some of these are more substantial than others.Disc one:About the series. Runs two mins. One of those brief promotional things with cast and crew and clips. An introduction to the set. Also two mins. As substantial as the above. The big moment. Two minute long looks at key events in early episodes. Interesting but brief.Welcome to westworld. Seven mins of cast and crew promoting it. A bit better than the first two features.Realizing the dream. Ten mins of the two lead producers talking about the early days of production. Not bad.Imagining the main title. Thirteen mins about how the title sequence was done. A bit more in depth than perhaps it needs to be, but interesting.Disc two:Two more big moments.Gag reel: a mere one minute with a handful of outtakes and the usual face pulling. Some of the former are quite funny.Disc three:Two more big moments.Key to the chords. Seven mins about the music in the show. A really good and interesting watch.Crafting the narrative. Twenty eight mins of the two producers doing commentary on key moments. Also interesting and good.It also has the usual flyer with code for downloading a copy of the show onto a digital device.Do be aware that there is an extra scene after the end credits of episode ten.

Fantastic series, one of the best ever made.
Fantastic series. One of the very few things I watched, and wouldn't change a thing. It starts a little slow, you've got to allow the first hour. Only people I've known who haven't been hooked watchedthe first 40 minuts or so, and didn't give it that hour to hook them.People have also complained it jumps all over the place timeline wise, but it's honestly not that hard to follow if you pay attention. If you're sat on your phone or something while watching I can see getting a bit confused, but it's just a slightly harder thing to follow than pulp fiction. Which, in the grand scheme of things wasn't hard. You can separate the timelines easily enough due to who is in them, and slot them together when it becomes clear. But other than that it's fantastic. Moral questions, great acting, great effects, good story, some solid twists, a fantastic soundtrack. There's really not much more you could ask for in a series, unless you're buying something for light watching, in which case I suggest you buy this anyway and the go and get futurama or something. Then watch this another time.

Did I miss something?
I was very much looking forward to series 1, having read so many 5 star reviews. And of course I have fond memories of the film from so many years ago (and I can still hear Yul Brynner’s footsteps.....). This is a completely different animal from that film, and I readily accept that. But to be honest I found it slow, laboured and lacking in suspense or excitement. For me the various British accents seemed out of place in this setting (with the possible exception of Anthony Hopkins). And I say that as a Brit who very much likes to see British actors shine in American series, as they so often do; Thandie Newton was for me miscast, and Simon Quarterman lacked the necessary gravitas. Even the normally imposing Ed Harris seemed out of sorts. Overall I found a number of the performances to be quite wooden. The score was equally uninspiring.Frankly I found it something of a chore to watch through all ten episodes. Yes it was slick - perhaps it tried too hard to be slick, but in my view, and with apologies to all those that gave it a 5 star rating, it was like the ‘hosts’ - soulless. I won’t be watching series 2.

Great show and 2 copies for the price of one
I love this show. The blu ray comes in a simple box and isn’t overly full of fancy designs. The bonus is that the whole thing also comes with a digital version for me to watch on my phone or tablet.

VERY INTERESTING SCIENCE FICTION.
I ENJOYED THIS SERIES. IT IS FULL OF MISTAKES. SUCH AS SAYING THERE WERE 2500 GUESTS TO 4000 ANDROIDS. CLEARLY THERE ARE MANY MORE ANDROIDS THAN GUESTS FOR IT TO WORK. AND THERE WOULD ALSO HAVE TO BE SOME RULES REGARDS BEHAVIOUR. STUPID GUESTS COULD KILL INDISCRIMINATELY AND EVEN RAPE OTHER GUESTS THINKING THEY WERE ANDROIDS. AND MANY OTHER MISTAKES. BUT ITS GOOD FUN AND MAKES YOU THINK ABOUT WHAT IT IS TO BE A HUMAN BEING. I WOULD RECOMMEND IT TO PEOPLE THAT ENJOYED THE WESTWORLD MOVIES.

Marvellous Revamp of classic film
Quite simply, a masterpiece. Quite different to, but as good as Game of Thrones. Quality cast, including Antony Hopkin; quality script and direction. Very clever mystery....cerebral - don't expect it to be spelled out for you. Can't wait for Season 2.

Misses the charm of the original series
I enjoyed the original series with Yul Brynner more as it had more charm about it. This I found soul less, but maybe that's what the writer was after - who knows? The seller though, did a good job with the item arriving in time and good concition. I gave 5 stars for the seller but in my view the item is only a 3 star, not the sellers fault though.

Excellent series.
This is a new take on the old film of the same title from many years ago starring Yul Brynner as a killer robot. Very different from the original, it has much better special effects and plot twists along the way which caught me by surprise, especially the Man In Black. Lots of violence and some naked bodies, so not one for the younger viewers but very entertaining for adults who enjoy a mix of Cowboys and Science Fiction.
