This is the best mute for volume reduction.
This is the best mute for volume reduction.I have tried the rubber Ultra USA practice mute, the unbranded 'Heavy metal violin mute', and the Tonwolf Chrome/Brass Violin Mute. All three significantly reduce the volume of the violin but some are better than others.Of the three this (Tonwolf) is the quietest, and has a better tone than the rubber mute (Ultra USA). The 'Heavy Metal' mutes are better at keeping the violin's 'natural' tone, and are the second quietest mutes. The rubber mutes are cheap, but the tone is significantly altered, and the volume is not reduced as much. The rubber mute is least likely to damage your instrument, and the metal mutes are a little scary to fit on the bridge at first, but there is no need to worry. If you are careful, non of them should damage your bridge. Those complaining that the Tonwolf slips off: I believe that either you have an unusually thin bridge, or the mute may be faulty. In my experience, the Tonwolf has a tighter grip than any of the other mutes I have tried.Note: No mutes I have found so far reduce the volume as much as I would like (for late night practice etc.). For this I would suggest, perhaps, purchasing a very cheap student instrument, stuffing it with old newspaper (through the F holes - careful not to knock the sound post out of place though!), and then applying this mute. That is the quietest you can get (without buying a "silent" instrument).I've not found any other 'in-depth' comparatave mute reviews; I hope this information helps!

One Star
Cannot for the life of me figure out how this attaches to my bridge.

Annoying but works
This mute certainly reduces the noise of the violin to the point where you won;t annoy other people in the house however when it first came it was so tight that it damaged the bridge and yet after only a few sessions of playing it's now so loose that I can barely play anything on the G-string without it slipping off.

Reasonable practice mute, but the clip is a bit too tight.
This mute does do the job of making your violin quieter without too much distortion, but, I found the clip rather tight and I have been worried about damaging the bridge. It did leave some slight marks where I used it initially. However, after a while the clip has loosened and it's been a lot easier to get on and off.

It does a very respectable job of muting the sound of the violin and has a good secure fitting onto the bridge (you may need to
The Tonwolf is my "go to" practise mute. It does a very respectable job of muting the sound of the violin and has a good secure fitting onto the bridge (you may need to adjust the width of the teeth to fit your bridge without marking it).I have a heavier brass style mute which does a better job of muting, but it has to rest/sit on top of the bridge and is not stable in the same way as the Tonwolf (you need to be careful to keep your violin level), and I worry about it falling onto my violin and damaging it.Also have a large rubber mute, but it isn't nearly as good as the Tonwolf.

OK as metal mutes go, but flies out.
Use on practice violins only. Better than rubber mutes but not nearly as effective as my previous metal one. Flies off once a day at least despite having a new regular bridge.

Cumple bastante bien...
Apaga el sonido bastante bien. Hay que ajustar un poco la presión para que no dañe el puente del violín. Cumple bien su cometido. Me gustó.
