An exciting read
Having just returned from a cruise involving Santorini this made the book more immediate and brought back memories of the choppy seas and strong winds that are often experienced in the area. The characters are well-drawn and I especially liked Commander Talbot, the laid-back skipper, who was deceptively urbane. Though I am female I do find female characters in books intensely irritating so the three in this book, having minor parts, were bearable and served to move the story along. The aristocratic classicist, Lieutenant Denholm, is an understated genius with electronics - I do prefer self-effacing men to the gung-ho types: more depth! The story was wide ranging in its setting: from the White House to Athens to Santorini and somehow very credible. Having a naval father helped me to appreciate the difficulties at sea where care and patience and tidinesss are vital, so the painstaking plans of the recovery and safe disposal of the dangerous item were believable. A good read that has not really dated if you ignore modern developments in communication and electronics. I love a thriller!!

Nowhere near his best
Another "late" MacLean, with the disappointment that brings with it. Slightly better than Partisans but nowhere near MacLean at his best.

Book shown as English but arrived in Dutch
Book was in Dutch, I don't feel this was shown via the picture as that was in English. it was however in description just wouldn't want others to be mislead as I was.

Rather a let-down
I was a big fan of Alistair Maclean when I was younger, so started this with anticipation of a pacy, well-written adventure yarn. Disappointingly, the characters were caricatures, and the dialogue was unexpectedly stilted and artificial. Not sure if it's because I'm older and more discerning, but I finished the book feeling very let down.

A Poor Reflection
Clearly waning this is a poor effort that lacks the detail and credibility of earlier work. A weak plot with weaker characters the story stretches credibility too far.Avoid.

Plot is still relevant today
Years ago, when I was young I read a few of MacLean's books and thoroughly enjoyed them. Years passed and it wasn't until I saw the film "Ice Station Zebra" on TV that rekindled my interest in MacLean. I made a list of his books which I haven't read and ordered 3. I shall be ordering more in the future. "Santorini" is a great read. One of the things I liked is that the plot is plausible even 30+ years after its initial publication. We can relate to the characters as they are just like us ordinary folk. They don't rely on super powers but use their brains to solve the problem. MacLean keeps the plot moving and his characters act consistently in the plot. No "deus ex machina" is needed. Hollywood has made films from some of MacLean's books and I am quite surprised that "Santorini" hasn't been turned into a film.I would definitely recommend this book

Not worth the title.
Missed all the plus points of Alistair. Lots of gaps and unreality in storyboard. Things suddenly happen to favor the Captain. No suspense. You can predict the end after completing first two chapters.

Santorini

An Oldie but a Goodie
I've read this many a time over the years, and I enjoy it every single time. It's standard MacLean; extremely capable men who aren't necessarily heroic, but certainly shine in a tight spot, with plenty of intrigue, action and suspense. I've been reading these books for over 20 years (I started when I was 12 thanks to my father) and I still go back to them every couple of years or so.
