Does the kr mini run ok on rechargeable aa batteries? (the manual stipulates alkaline, but many say that to simply mean 'don't use low-capacity ones')

This mainly depends on the rechargeable batteries, typically these provide 1.2V whereas more recent and expensive types do provide 1.5v, the same as an alkaline battery. Under low voltage conditions, the KRMINI may behave erratically and is why the manual states alkaline. Using rechargeable won't damage the unit, I would suggest trying your batteries and seeing how it performs. The KORG KA350 PSU is a good investment for use where you have access to a power socket, but for completely portable use, batteries are the only option

Does it play 3/4 time?

Yes it has a recordable memory innit.

I plan to use this for gigging: Can you save a number of beats (say 20 or so) and name them, so it's easy to switch beats during a performance?

I bought this for a friend, had a little muck about with it first so I'm not an expert with this bit of kit. I'm quite sure however that you can save rhythm patterns to lettered/numbered locations and recall them quickly. This is most ideal as a practice tool, the on-board speaker means you can just put it on and play along without the need for further equipment. The greatest limitation of this machine is that it has such a small number of drum sounds available, and this is almost unforgivable in this day and age where memory is so cheap - and this limited palette of drum sounds is not all that great. That said, still might be a good easy solution for live performance, I'd recommend buying it and trying it from somewhere that is happy to take it back if you aren't completely happy with it.
