Takes the flip-flop to a whole new level
I usually don't write reviews a few hours after the product arrives, but I've bought a lot of Birks the last few years, and I was really pleased with the way this pair felt right out of the box. Because it's now the middle of the hottest part of the summer I'm already used to the feel of the toe piece between my big and my second toes, and the leather seems more supple than it did in some of my others when I first got them. The box says "Habana, Waxy Leather." I don't know if the waxy leather is different from the oiled leather or not. I have two pairs of black oiled leather sandals that were pretty stiff when they were new, although they're now fine. But the leather in this pair is much softer. Anyhow, these are comfortable right out of the box for me. These are my first pair of Gizehs, and I love the look. I have high arches and really need the support that Birks give. The color is a natural looking dark brown with just a hint of red. And one more word about the sizes. I wish Birkenstock would start warning people that their footwear runs large. I wear a size 9 in the US, a 40 in most European shoes, but a 39 in Birks. If you've never bought them before, go in a local store and try some on til you get the right fit. It could save you some grief.

COMFORT!!! BUT take your time breaking these in!
These sandals were exactly what I have been wanting! Birkenstock sizes are a little off, so if you have the chance to try them on in a store I would do that to find your correct size. I am usually a 7.5-8, and I ordered the size 38. I was waiting to write a review of these sandals until I broke them in. I've had them about a month now and they are finally broken in!! The toe post is definitely a little bothersome at first, and the rivet on the underside of the strap that holds to toe post in place leaves a small black stain on my foot from the black painted coating it had. The trick to getting these to fit most comfortably is making sure your foot is placed properly in them - which means your heel should be at the aback of the shoe, even if you have shorter toes that don't reach as far as you'd like (my big toe is a little short, but my other toes line up nicely). Be prepared to experience some pain while breaking these in. I started off by wearing them just a couple hours a day around the house, then slowly built up as they became more broken in. You will know when they are broken in as the shape of your foot will be completely imprinted, and the shoe conforms to the shape of your foot. At week 2 I wore them for several hours on a walk around downtown, and that was a mistake! Lots of blisters to prove it. There is tons of information online about breaking these in and taking care of them properly. It's definitely best to take your time breaking these in, but with that being said, these sandals are AWESOME now that I have put in the hours to break them in. I love the neutral color of the tobacco and I can say these are 100% authentic Birkenstock sandals. So happy with my purchase!

A must for fallen arches/flat feet/plantar fasciitis
If you suffer from plantar faciitis let me start by saying I feel your pain. I had a case so bad that 3 cortisone shots did not help. Long story short I eventually had shock wave therapy on my foot, and after 3 months of healing (and a month in a sexy walking boot!) my foot was better. Since then, I have been super careful about the types of shoes I wear. In many cases (like mine) the PF was the result of poor arch support. I have custom orthotics that I wear in my sneakers at the gym, but I certainly can't wear them all the time. That's where these shoes fit in, I actually live in these shoes during the summer! If you've never worn Birkenstocks before be aware that you will need to break them in a bit. I would start by wearing them a couple hours a day for the first couple of weeks, then you will see find that they fit you like a glove. Don't be discouraged if your feet feel sore the first couple of times wearing them, over time the cork will mold to your feet. As far as the look, this is about as cute as a Birkenstock can get. I live in New York City and I see these all the time in the summer, both by tourists and city dwellers alike. There's a reason they are so popular, they are "cute enough" and super comfortable. I now own 2 pairs.

Cute and sturdy
I have been wanting a sandal that I could travel in and feel comfortable in and I think these will be it! I went to a Birkenstock store and talked to a woman who has been wearing and selling them for 30 years and is a big believer. She told me that there are two styles of softness in the sole- the blue detail indicates that the sole is softer and the yellow detail is firmer and more traditional. She explained that while the softer sole initially is more comfortable, it doesn't last long. She noted that after you break in the harder sole, it molds to your feet more than the softer and is ultimately more comfortable! She said that they do need to be broken in and it takes the heat from your feet and the weight of your body to make them the amazing shoes everyone raves about. I am a 39/8.5 and I got a 38. I am a 39 in Dansko normally. Update: One year later I bought my second pair and I cannot say enough about these! They are so comfortable that I wear them every day- not kidding. I bought a new pair that I can wear with dresses! My feet never hurt and my sciatica is gone too! Pros: Sturdy, good for posture and correcting your step, durable, comfortable (in the future!) and cute! Cons: Takes time to break in, the piece between the toes is plastic and uncomfortable (I am hoping this will get better)

I ordered the shoes in my regular size which turned out to be too big. I contacted the company and arranged a return, after one email it was sorted for me to receive a replacement pair as soon as the return was posted. I can’t fault the customer service at all. Communication was faultless and I will be using them again because the shoes are like my feet are being kissed by the gods. Heel pain is no more and I’m gonna need more colours

As per most Birkenstock, these are pretty firm and feel uncomfortable when you first get them. I have several pairs of Birkenstocks and this normal as they eventually conform to your particular foot shape. I already knew my shoe size, but if you don't, I'd recommend trying them on in an actual shop first before ordering as they are a close fit and if you have a wider/slender foot, you might feel more comfortable with a different size. I have a few pairs of Gizeh and I love them. I'm lucky enough to not have to wear closed in shoes to work (I'm in Education) and these are perfect for the scorching temperature when I live. As I said, they are uncomfortable to wear to start with, but they wear in after a week or two, depending on how much you wear them and what kind of work you're doing. I'm on my feet all day and I love how these shoes are sturdy and firm, while shaping to my feet enough to be comfortable when wearing them for hours at a time. I wear them for both work and play. They do look at bit chunky so lean more towards the casual side of footwear, but they look smart enough for casual wear and I get comments on them regularly. The white looks great with shorts or slacks and go with most outfits. I also find they support my higher arch. I haven't been disappointed in my Birkenstocks yet and this pair in no different.
