Q: So is it like the "soft drink" can openers we had before ring-pulls ?

Yes, soft drinks, beer and evaporated milk cans etc. It makes a decent-sized triangular hole and it's best to make another hole opposite the first for better pouring. It's strong and well made, chrome plated and nicely old-fashioned! The other end is made for crown caps as found on beer and soft drink bottles. Hope that helps.

Q: Can you open a can of beans

I would say no (or certainly only with a lot of effort!). Unlike the stab can opener that we had at home when I was a kid, this one is VERY ineffective. I had to make several attempts to even be able to punch a semi-hole in the can of evaporated milk I was trying to open. The opener just didn't stay latched on at all and the stab'y end kept jumping up unless I held it down with one finger and pushed down hard for it to even penetrate the tin at all. It's pretty useless in that respect, although I think the bottle lid opener end may be more effective at doing that!

Yes it is. You can use both ends to open mental bottle tops.
