If the images aren’t sharp it’s probably not the lens!
Sharp throughout the zoom range right out to the edges. I mean really sharp. So sharp your can cut your eyes looking through the viewfinder. I was fortunate enough that no fine tuning was required.Focus is fast, it takes much longer to select the focus point than for the lens to lock and track focus.VR does the job fine. Bokeh is pretty pleasant, not the very best but perfectly acceptable in most situations. Unless you need a faster lens it replaces a bagful of primes, it’s that good. There’s a bit of vignetting but easy to correct if it bothers you, the same applies to the small amount of CA.The positions of the zoom and focus rings take a bit of getting used to as they are the opposite of most of Nikon’s pro lenses and the zoom ring at the front has a slight negative impact on my ability to hand hold with maximum stability, given the other qualities of this piece of kit it’s by no means a deal breaker. The function buttons are handy, as a back button focus user it’s really useful as it frees up my right thumb for focus point selection.I thought long and hard about this purchase, it’s a lot of money and the f/4 is a lot lighter. I have absolutely no regrets about choosing this though, it’s an absolute delight to use and does its job so well you can just concentrate on composition and exposure.

A great sharp, fast, but heavy lens.
I ordered this lens but it got smashed in transit and a lot of hassle and loooong wait for Amazon refund. So I speak of this lens as buying it from a different store. This lens is heavy, and on an already heavy camera with added grip (D850), the weight shows, so you better get used to it. However, for that weight having F2.8 all the way through the zoom range is great. This lens also has amazingly fast auto focus. You'll have to look online for sample images, but it is a sharp lens. Like with most things DSLR, you'll have to decide if you should get this lens as everything's going to mirrorless, who knows how long this will still be in production for, DSLRs seem to getting phased out. But if you have a good DSLR I doubt you'll regret this lens - other than the large price which makes you wince when you press "order".

Great Performer
I rented the Nikon F4 version for a theatre event before buying this, which I liked, but decided I needed the extra light from the new F2.8 version as I take a lot of low light photography and my 70-200 F4 experience delivered many images that were just too noisy. It is not as heavy as I feared though it's not something you want to carry for more than 2 to 3 hours. That aside, the lens delivers wonderful images, creamy bokeh and is sharp, sharp, sharp into the edges on my full-frame D750. Note that the removable foot on the collar is not Arca-Swiss compatible so I had to buy a third-party replacement one from Kirk.

Superb update to the workhorse lens.
Superb update to the workhorse lens. Faster focusing and more balanced in the hand (owing to the focusing and zoom rings being swapped over - takes a few shots to get used tot he change but it makes complete ergonomic sense)

You get what you pay for.
I was going holding back to buy the new Tamron G2 version but after some serious thinking I bought this because with having many Nikon lenses and third party lens it's always the Nikon that keeps a high re sale tag. You really sort of do get what you pay for with Nikon. Ok about the lens..... It's super fast and pin sharp on my Nikon D4 and D500. The VR on this new unit is a dreamers dream. Very expensive but worth it.
