seems a bit flimsy but hung it outside in anticipation and waiting for the gold finches to return to the garden. last year they were nesting either in my 20 foot holly tree or close by as I saw them carrying nesting materials and feeding together which was lovely, but think they decided to move on cause of the cats or something. it takes time to entice them and will just have to wait and see if the level is falling. put a report in error on site wrong seller. no problems with the way it was packaged or arrived from amazon.

A Nyger feeder that works!
Once the Goldfinches discovered it they have been back every day. We have three that visit regularly. A major plus is that the holes are big enough for the birds to get the seeds but not so big the seed falls out easily. It is easy to fill. I was a bit worried that plastic would break easily but it is proving robust so far and is much better quality than other feeders I have bought. It is a great delight to have Goldfinches in the garden now.

Seems fine, but...
...not a single finch has touched the nyger seeds we put in it, having clamoured with all the other birds at the big 'squirrel-proof' (HA!) bird food container which, by the way is not even jackdaw-proof (they hang upside down, like the squirrels, and scoff away). So in a way this one is everything-proof, as nobody is interested in nyger seeds in the first place...

Better than I initially thought....
We have several birdseed feeders in the garden and have regular visits from most of the tits ( great , blue , longtailed)and finches( green and bull) and the odd woodpecker. I had noted goldfinches on a neighbours teazels so I bought some nyjer seed but found them way too small for conventional feeders and do not work if simply mixed with conventional seed mixes. Quick search found the solution . The Gardman feeder arrived promptly from Amazon . Initial impressions however were that it is very "plasticky" and lightweight. However the goldfinches ( a pair) have been on it daily for the last week since they discovered it ( ca 2days) - even in recent ( as or 8/6/2012) the gale force winds which were making the feeders swing out horizontally. Evidently they prefer the narrow seed aperture which also (mostly) stops the any seed spilling out . The unit loads and seals easily ( it appears to be remarkably waterproof) and its small size seems to make is squirrel proof ( they fall off). Definitley recommended! ( Good price too!)

Good for quite a while
This feeder is a replacement for an older one that lasted about 10-12 years, so its life is not at all bad. As with most plastic feeders, prolonged sunlight will eventually make the plastic become cloudy and brittle and at some point the thing will just crack when you lift it for a refill. We've yet to get the goldfinches back onto the two feeders we have for them, but we're sure they will return. The other weak spot is the hinge for the plastic lid. With care, the lid can be secured there even when the hinge has broken, but the lid hinge seems pretty durable for what use it gets. Overall, a pretty good feeder for a decent price. The birds seem happy with it. Obviously, to them, this technology is indistinguishable from magic, bless their little cotton socks.

I like Gardman feeders
I've now got a few of these Gardman feeders, they're not fancy but they last very well, are easy to clean and the birds seem to like them. I've already got the bird seed feeder and peanut feeder which are still going strong after a couple of years use, I've bought the nyger seed feeder to try and attract some different birds into the garden such as finches. At the price I think they represent excellent value.
