The "other Yes"
After avoiding them for 20 years, I finally decided to give ABWH a chance. I knew I wouldn't like their album, but figured this DVD of a 1989 show might be OK. I was mainly curious about what Bill Bruford and his electronic drumkit had brought to the older Yes music that's on this video. In all, it's not bad. Even the music from the ABWH album is passable, especially when it's broken up with the older Yes standards. The ABWH music is inferior, but it's not nearly as terrible as some others seem to think it is. My main complaints are that this material sounds kinda generic, and Jon Anderson's twee New Age lyrics do rather irritate. These same problems are found in nearly all the post-Rabin Yes music too, unfortunately. What's with the extra players here? Aside from bassist Jeff Berlin, there is another guitarist and another keyboardist. With Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman onstage, who needs backup? These two extra players are barely noticeable in the mix and seem superfluous in the extreme. The cameras almost completely ignore them too.The highlights are of course the older Yes music, and seeing Mr Bruford reunited with his old band. He seems to be enjoying himself somewhat at least, only looking bored when he has to play 4/4 sometimes. He clearly put lots of thought into what his contributions would be. You can really see how much Bruford improved as a drummer in all those years away from Yes; they don't call him World's Greatest for nothing. I liked the electronic drums a lot; they really freshened up the old music and brought an interesting texture to it. Usually e-drums scream "stale 80s", but here they sound really great and have aged quite well. Early in the show there's a radical take on "Heart of the Sunrise" that is basically a start-stop machine-gun duet between Bruford and Howe, sans vocals. Later on the band reprises the song in the "proper" way. The problematic absence of Chris Squire, for me, was largely compensated for by seeing Bruford's thrilling performance. There's some very different takes on "Long Distance Runaround", "Close to the Edge", and "Starship Trooper". I guess in this configuration the band saw an opportunity to experiment with these standards a bit more than they usually do, and it made me wish they would do this more often. The version of "Your Move/All Good People" is likely the best one I've seen - very cool.In all I would recommend this video to the experienced Yes fan who is prepared to be a bit open minded. If you're also a Bill Bruford fan, this show is indispensable. This video represents a one-off, historically unique version of Yes which deserves a look.

Pick it up before it goes out of print
Not many people I know enjoyed the ABWH stuff as much as I did. Since I have never seen this and missed the first printing of this DVD, I was glad when they re-released this at a decent price. This 2 ½ hour concert consists of the basic Yes faves (killer version of "Close to the Edge") and a nice selection of tunes from the ABWH album. The video footage is clear but the camera is not always where it should be and there are some cheesy video effects. The audio is decent but comes only with a stereo mix and there are no extra features - what a bummer.Anderson, as always, appears to be in a state of bliss, Bruford is armed with his electronic kit and seems to be enjoying most of the gig, Wakeman is surrounded by nine keyboards (not sure if he uses all of them) and is nearly flawless, and Howe is animated and looks happy. The other rarely seen musicians on this DVD are - Jeff Berlin (bass, vocals), Julian Colbeck (keys, vocals), and Milton McDonald (guitar, vocals).Overall this is an awesome souvenir of a brief moment in time and all ABWH fans, that don't already own this, should get this before it goes out of print again.FYI - Amazon's product description mentions this comes with a photo booklet and sleeve notes. Mine didn't have these items.

Finally! And worth the wait!
I can remember when the CD came out and I, like many other Yes fans, were starved for new music. Along comes ABWH to save the day.Having subsequently seen them in concert, I was only to pleased to buy this CD of An Evening of Yes Music Plus. I proceeded to wear it out, lose it, buy it again AND lose it again.Somehow when I saw this DVD the other day I couldn't help but purchase it.OMG! This is probably the best YES DVD ever. Amazing concert footage, awesome songs, great sound and lots of close-ups of Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman. Overhead views of Bill Bruford gleefully playing the synth drums.I had forgotten how wonderful a concert experience this was (not this show, but ABWH in Houston) and now I can finally enjoy it again and again.I often wished that there were a video to go with the CD. I'm not sure why it took so long to release, but this is absolutely one of the better Yes releases in years.Yes Symphonic is good, too. :)

an Evening of Yes Music Plus
It's a real treat to see this line up of Yes members with Bill Bruford (visibly enjoying his important contributions to these compositions and performances). The CD bearing the same title has always been among my favorite "Yes" music albums, although Jeff Berlin's bass playing was noticeably, and unfairly, de-emphasized on that audio mix. One of my disappointments was that, although Tony Levin was the regular on that tour, illness prevented him from being on this recording!! At least, that's my understanding. I so wish I could have heard his inimitable performance on bass, Chapman Stick, keyboards, etc. alongside ABWH. This DVD busted my illusion that it was Wakeman and Howe who were accompanying Jon on the "Time and a Word/Teakbois/Owner of a Lonely Heart" medley, not guest artists. I highly recommend this DVD to any Yes music fan; get it before it goes out of print. You'll find the renditions of these songs to be unique and vibrant and thoroughly enjoyable. Personally, I think it's timeless. The audio and video quality is very good; the musicianship- exceptional. Crank it up!

John Anderson - Live From La La Land LIVE IN AMERICA〜PULLING STRINGS John Anderson - Live From La La LandLIVE IN AMERICA〜PULLING STRINGS

The Best Live Yes Album - Ever!
When I put this DVD on the player it was like setting off a load of fireworks, the display of which lasted for two hours. I was not expecting to see anything like this by this band. All the Yes favourites are here including the band's 'own' material. But come on, this band were Yes. OK the DVD does not have widescreen, but what you get is great sound quality, great musicianship and a high energy performance. I do not like live albums as a rule, but this has go among the very exceptions. It's the very greatest live Yes album. No Yes fan should be without it. I would have paid double the price for this, it's that good.
