Pacific Rim [4K Ultra-HD] [2013] [Blu-ray] [2016] [Region Free]

Definitely 4K UHD showcase is this movie. Good film, but on my LG OLED with 5.1.2 set up it was a revelation. Enjoyed it very much, definitely worth the purchase.

Huge robots, even bigger alien things and Del Toro... what more could you possibly want?So by all accounts its a fairly by the book turn off your brain action adventure with your standard cheesy dialogue, one dimensional characters and slightly silly posturing but, and oh my what a but it is the most beautiful, detailed and epic piece of monster carnage you could ever wish to see!Del Toro always does the small little nuances and background scenes so well and this shows throughout the film, and the fight scenes are astonishing, each of the Jaegers and monsters are different in styles, movements, actions etc so its not just a bish bash bosh of Bayesque muddled CGI punchups but lavishly coreographed tear ups, and frankly you can't help but cheer when Gypsy Danger goes to town on a big ugly kaiju using a supertanker.Yes, this film has a massive robot clobbering an alien with a supertanker.If that one line right there doesn't make you want to watch this film then nothing ever willBrilliant!!

After a couple of false stars, director Guillermo Del Toro finally gets another movie under his belt, with a film designed to appeal to the big kid in all of us.This is one of those movies that has to get the exposition in at the start: monsters christened Kaiju are attacking coastal cities, after appearing from the depth of the ocean. Humanity fights back with Jaegers. Giants robots that can beat Kaiju in a one on one fight. Jaegers are each controlled by two human pilots, whose minds need to be very compatible in order to be in sync.Jaeger pilot Raleigh Becket [Charlie Hunnam] is introduced to us in this opening sequence, which sets the scene with the aforementioned exposition, gives you a spectacular battle scene in stormy weather, and a very visually arresting conclusion. Plus putting Raleigh at the start of a character journey.Flash forward a few years. With Raleigh no longer in the Jaeger programme. And said programme seemingly done for as governments go for big walls on the coast instead, the Jaeger programme has to survive on it's own. It's leader Stacker Pentecost [Idris Elba] bring Charlie back into the fold.But with an obsolete machine and an untested partner, can everything come together in tome to save humanity?The film does feature a fair few other moments of Jaegers battling monsters in the ocean, story or otherwise. All of which re pretty spectacular visually.Charlie Hunnam is a capable lead. Idris Elba makes an effortlesly good commander figure. Comic relief comes from Burn Gorman and Charlie day as a pair of squabbling scientists. These characters are played just right, never going for stereotypes or easy laughs.There's also a pair of tough Australian Jaeger pilots with family issues. Who do make an impression.The fight stuff is all good, the oriental setting is well portrayed. And the characters are all fine. But no more than that. All of them have character journeys and develop over the course of the movie, and are in different places by the end. But none are particularly remarkable or standout creations. You won't mind them, and you will be quite happily following them, but none will really stick in your mind for very long.The Jaeger vs Kaiju fights will though. For a bit longer.It's a very capable bit of blockbuster entertainment, with lots to grab the eye. But it's just lacking that certain something to take it up to five star material. A decent enough escapist watch, though. As usual with these there are a couple of genuinely funny moments amongst shots of people pulling funny faces.There's also the usual flyer with website address and code to allow you to download a digital copy of the film onto a digital device from that site.

A great fun movie that I absolutely love, ok its acting isn't anything special but if you're a fan of Japanese movie monsters, a kaiju fan and love seeing giant robots knocking some sense into a monster the size of a skyscraper then this is a movie you'll love and its one of those films where it actually has excellent cgi when needed and set pieces and practical effects when it doesn't, its just a movie I love because I'm a kaiju fan and with a burning love for robots monsters and other creatures like king kong and Godzilla (who aren't in this by the way just in case some found my comment misleading) its a blast, although the upcoming sequel in feburary 2018 seems like it will go down a much more well acted, menacing, more of a sense of loss kind of way and its directed by steven s deknight the very person behind the gritty well acted brutal daredevil Netflix series from marvel means it will probably make the sequel a much better movie but this is as fun as films get and I freaking love it.

Okay so their really genetic constructs (rather than aliens as such) versus giant mech suits. Still doesn't stop it from being one the best made CGI fighting films I've seen. Better than any of Transformers anyway, as you can tell what is going on. No confusion as to who is winning or losing a fight and definitely a clear good guy bad guy thing. So that the ending is truly uplifting, though uplifting is a bit of a strong word to use here. It's also shameless about it's story just being an excuse for awesome robot fights, which I like. I kinda hate it when these sort of films try to have a story as to leads to some really bad dialogue and a clumsy love scene or romance etc. A fun watch and a shameless block buster.
