a small compressor 25 litre or even smaller will suffice i run mine from a 50 litre and turn the air pressure down works great

The on off switch is the shut off valve from the compressor. You couls use the air feed screw on the device itself but that would be rather awkward.

What is the 1.5m hose for? Is this a coolant intake? Does coolant need pumping into the unit?

Yes it's the coolant intake, when air is feed into the unit it sucks the coolant from the reservoir. Both air and coolant flow can be controlled by the adjuster screws on the side.
