Like a Bird: The Art of the American Slave Song

This book appears to be written for children but I was smitten by this book. It incompuses a history that is overlooked by most school curriculum and is spoken of under the breath as if it is to be hidden from view. The art work enhances the subject matter: Songs of American Slaves. The book offers the sheet music and the words of the songs sung by a subjugated people of their hopes, dreams and troubles. This is a wonderful book for anybody of any age.

This is a beautifully done book! The artwork is just lovely on each page and there is music notation for the melody of each song listed. I bought it because I loved that artwork but it would be appropriate for children old enough to read, especially if they can read the music - though that is not necessary.

This title needs to be in every school library. A historically significant and thoughtful respectful collection.

Can’t wait to read it/ sing it to my nephew

This is a beautifully illustrated book for children of all ages - a most welcome addition to my collection of African American history books. The subject matter reached into my heart and caused me to experience the heaviness of the subject matter, yet these are songs I heard all my life not knowing the history behind the lyrics and music. It was just a powerful, wonderful reading experience for me.
