No it doesn't auto open. It does have an assisted opening lever. It opens fast and very fluid.

Q: Damascus pattern stopping short of edge indicates likely etching and not real damascus?

All modern pattern welded/ damascus steel will show no pattern at the edge unless you etch the steel again after sharpening. Many blades are also made with a core of plain steel and damascus steel "sandwiched" on the outside.

Poor Construction

The media could not be loaded. Beautiful blade and comes VERY SHARP and well oiled……poor construction though…..this thing is about to pop loose and I haven’t had it for a month. You will need to buy a cheap little set of tools to keep it tightened. I have to shelf mine until Wednesday when Amazon arrives. It literally feels like it is about to fall apart.

Good craftsmanship Good material, looks good, opens and closes good, looks good, not a expert on steel but with a magnifying glass you can see the fold lines on the flat edge and the sharp edge,and was very easy to put a razor edge on it just like real damascus steel, so yes I think that is real damascus steel. The one I received came with a cheap nylon sheath and no zipper case as shown, minus one star
