1980's
Brings back memories of time long forgotten. To truly understand this era, you had to live through it. I miss those days-it had its turmoil. But between that there was a lot of good times.

Beautiful Book!
I commonly collect art books and photography books for inspiration, and this is definitely a must-have for anyone interested in black culture and fashion between the 70s and the 90s! Jamel Shabazz captures nostalgic glimpses of various communities that reflect cultural identity, gender expression, and family values of the time!

Shabazz is One of a Kind
Shabazz is a more than simply a great photographer. His work transcends the medium and chronicles NYC black life in a loving, empathetic, and inimitable way. All this was done with the backdrop of an America that's highly and unfairly critical of black life. (For example, the shallow and racist portrayal of black criminality of the 90's.)Steidl is also commendable to print the photo albums as they are. It gives the work a warmth and approachability that is severely lacking in today's "fine art" photography, which is usually sterile, boring, cold, and plastic.
