Should the protective case handle of the brush #4 also have a small hole drilled at the end for air flow? Mine didn't.

I just bought a set and there are holes.

The ad says Kolinsky sable, but for that price, these are not Kolinsky. So what are they really?

I don't know what they are actually made of, but they perform just as well (in the short time I've had them) as my real, expensive Kolinsky brushes.

Do they err on the side of soft or stiff? Do they hold a lot of water?

Sable holds a lot of water, are soft but snap back. It’s real hair.

i really hope these are synthetic-- are they??

I can't be positive, but they are some of the best brushes I have ever bought. I have a couple actual Kolinsky brushes, and these behave similarly.
