Professional grade cuff
great! This is the same BP machine used in my clinic, works great, is professional grade and accurate. Well worth the price if you need to monitor your BP daily. It's easy to use, and saves your readings to the app on bluetooth device.

Better than a writs monitor.
Better than a wrist unit. Accurate with the doctor's monitor.

QA is not what it could be
Purchased the Welch Allyn Home 1700 Series Upper Arm Blood Pressure Monitor with Easy Bluetooth Smartphone Connectivity, Item model number: H-BP100SBP, from the Welch Allyn Home store on Amazon. I received it today. I put the batteries in, and connected the standard cuff that was included with it. I heard the click when I attached the cuff to the monitor. The monitor turned on fine. I can hear the motor attempting to inflate the cuff. However, the cuff does not inflate. At all. I had also purchased the XL and X-small cuff from WA Home, so I attached both of those cuffs as well and attempted to inflate them using the monitor. Neither of them were inflated by this monitor either. Regardless of the cuff used, the monitor attempts to inflate, then gives the E-01 message, every time. I've tried the cuffs on both the right and left arms, on both myself, and my husband. The E01- (cuff is not secure, readjust the cuff, relax for a moment, then measure again) message is the only result I can obtain. I take numerous blood pressures daily in a clinical setting as part of the function of my employment. I'm quite familiar with the proper way to take a blood pressure reading. This is not user error. Welch Allyn has been used in a clinical setting for... ages. It's a trusted brand. My concern is... what is going on with their QA? I've contacted their Tech Support, and will update this regarding the response of WA's support staff. **** Update **** I called their tech support line at 1-800-856-4605. Dude was super nice, and no questions asked is shipping a replacement unit out. I've been emailed a fedex label to ship the defective unit back at no cost to me. This took this review from 1 star, up to 3 stars. I will update this review again once I receive the replacement unit. **** Update 8/18/2020 **** Received the replacement unit just now. Put the batteries in, powered it up. It's in even worse shape than the original unit shipped to me. That one at least made noises like it was trying to inflate the cuff, and the monitor itself stayed powered on. The new unit? It powers up, shows a 0, then immediately powers off. I changed the batteries out. Changed the cuff out. Bottom line, this was a waste of 2 weeks of my time, and over a hundred bucks, especially since I ordered the x-small and x-large welch allyn cuffs to go with it. I only purchased this instead of omron because I figured Welch Allyn has been in the business so long, they'd HAVE to have it together, right? Clearly. Not. I'll go order an Omron right now, while I call tech support to get yet another return sticker. **** Update to my update **** K, I'll contact Amazon. WA support only handles warranty/replacement, they do not do refunds. Refunds have to go thru Amazon. Now you know.

SureBP for consumers, get it while you can
If you want a medical grade BP device, probably the only one marketed to consumers [ other than buying used medical grade on eiebaey ] or save money over the BP2000, the 1700 is it. It should get 5 stars for that alone, but the app being unavailable yet advertised that it is will turn off consumers, so minus 1 star at least There are 2 versions of this device, the older retired original 2017 release with metal cuff connectors, and the current 2019 release without it Pros validated BP device on validatebp.org accurate as a medical grade device. Over 50 measurements compared against a Welch Allyn Connex spot monitor [which cost $2500+], a far step above most validated consumer grade devices 1700 is essentially the $200 ProBP 2000, with bluetooth [useful if the app is revived] works as reliably and as fast as medical grade. One button click, <30 sec reading versus the established oscillometric method that runs >=40 secs reading, used in most consumer grade devices The 1700 supports TWO reading algorithms, SureBP for inflation, and if the device thinks the data is not reliable, will read on deflation using what appears as the medical grade StepBP. Both algorithms were validated in 2011, before validatebp.org, see Pubmed papers by Alpert backlit color LCD is very easy to see, even in a brightly lit room, and looks like the Connex in style, the 1500 is not backit and is in b&w the tubing, and device casing are not heavy duty as medical grade, but should last for consumer use operates bug free, connects to bluetooth reliably the Android app works on phones and tablets, can be found on archival app sites but it relies on a server connection to work whose continued support is unknown, see cons The app allows the data to be extracted and converted to CSV format for spreadsheets, as well graph measurements Cons There is no memory storage accessible to users. By original design, added features and unlimited storage were supposed to be on the Android or iPhone app, but the App v2.3.2 is not available via Google Play, last updated in 2023, or App Apple, last updated 2017, as of this review The app may not sync unless active; if phone sleeps the app may not awaken with the phone; to insure data is downloaded the app must be closed completely, and restarted; data will be collected inside the 1700 until then. An external reviewer claims the 1700 has a buffer of 100 measurements. On Omron's app, there is a force sync button that does this for Omron, so app restarts are not needed Originally released in 2017? the 1700 and 1500 had all potential to sweep the market: a medical grade BP device in a consumer product. But WA appears to have paused the consumer space some years before this review. The Android app is not available for download via Google Play or Apple, the consumer portal is dysfunctional, cuffs with the old adapter are still sold despite changing the 1700 adapter in 2019, the BP guidelines on the app are outdated [ its pre-2017 US BP guidelines] and the device is a notch down in build quality with thin plastic, it even bows the battery port when shut. It should not be much work to update the app to allow local downloads direct from the 1700 to a phone or tablet, without need for a server registration, and to export data as CSV format directly from the app, if Welch Allyn no longer wishes to support the Home server concept started on the original device roll out. They can give app update and maintenance to the community as open source or to the ODM under license. The 1700 is made by Transtek in China, a known manufacturer of BP monitors; the Connex Spot devices are made in USA

More Instrument than Gadget
This is only with a few days experience. The unit impressed initially by it's weight and solid construction. Most home devices seem lightweight and more toward the gadget side. The device seemed to carry a $20-$30 dollar premium in cost for equivalent function. This was rationalized as it is about my health and effectively communicate my BP history with my doctor across time rather than incidental clinical readings.. As an engineer, the intuitive feel was a well designed and thought out device. The readings have been quick. Repeat ability with a short pause, have been within a few points on each reading. Have not checked it with a clinical reading. The app paired easily. The app should be running with Bluetooth working at the finish of the read, and it transfers easily. If not running, or away from it for any reason, the device transfers the current reading and any readings missed to the app, without losing data. The data is stored in a secure cloud situation, I assume under HIPPA provisions. I wish Welch Allyn would confirm this in writing. Change phones, and the data is still there. I asked the tech if anyone shared your info if your doctor doesn't subscribe to their portal for patient evaluation of your persdonal readings, and they said they do not. Some gripe about the lack of multiple users on the machine and accommodation in the app. The truth is the device was designed as a one patient device to work with the app. From a design stand point, the data collected is likely covered under HIPPA and this would complicate the security of trying to have that convenience on one device and one app with one logon. Looking at the companies portfolio of connected hospital instruments indicated that they have had years of working with critical and protected data in wired/wireless environments. The app itself seems robust and intuitive. No problems under the latest OSX. Assuming the same app functionality, I would like to know if the app would work on a retired Apple or Android device (phone/tablet) using only a standard wireless LAN connection when the phone does not have Cellular data engaged.

Welch Allyn is no longer supporting the app for Android, don't know about iOS
I bought this unit because I used to be a truck driver and had to impress the DOT with my low blood pressure every two years. I got this unit so I could monitor my BP at home and have an idea of how things were going leading up to my DOT physicals. Fast forward four years, I'm no longer driving trucks, and I'm not as young as I used to be. My blood pressure is creeping up, so on doctor's advice, I want to monitor it daily and use the app to keep a record in my phone of my readings. Well, I went to update the Welch Allyn app in my Android phone today and got a "Could not update" error. So I uninstalled the app. When I went to reinstall, I find it no longer available on the Google Play Store. It seems that Welch Allyn has inexplicably decided to not support the app for Android any longer, and from reading reviews, it seems this problem began about three years ago. That's ridiculous and unacceptable. The BP monitor itself has always worked perfectly and still does. It's disappointing that the manufacturer would suddenly flip the bird to all the buyers of this model and stop supporting the app. I guess if I want to keep using this BP monitor I will have to record the results on pencil and paper, or a notes app in my phone. That makes it not nearly so easy to send the results to my doctor. Something like this is pretty ridiculous in this day and age. I like this BP monitor for its small size and ease of use, but I'm going to shop around and see what else is available, with an app that actually works. Very surprising to me that a trusted, known brand like Welch Allyn would do something like this. Disappointed to say the least.

This has the same technology as the professional Welch Allyn cuffs that MD's use
Buy the Welch Allyn H-BP100SBP Home Series 1700. It is twice the price of other cuffs for a very good reason..it has the same technology (Sure BP) as Physicians that use the professional Welch Allyn BP cuffs. A great feature is that this cuff only tightens as much as it needs to get an accurate BP. Other cuffs overly tighten and are more uncomfortable for multiple BP reads. Very important to have arm at same height as your heart as well as sitting up straight with both feet on the floor. Position the cuff about 1 inch from your elbow bend and have the air tube aligned with the middle of your arm. (The actual sensor is to the right of the tube which will be over your brachial artery.) Take multiple reading and you will see the BP settle into the lowest numbers. Use the Welch Allyn home app on your phone to capture the readings.

As described
I had high blood pressure secondary to sleep apnea and was told that with the correct amount of sleep and the help of an APAP machine that it may correct itself. Well, it did and my bp ended up crashing. My cardiologist wants me to monitor my pressure at home and he recommended this unit as it's similar to the one he has in his office. I have no real issues with the product. I ended up buying the AC power adapter as well, but have not had to use it yet, as the batteries with original purchase are still going strong. I like the fact that it has blue tooth adaptability. The app is very user friendly and it sends results quickly to the app. The unit is different than other bp units i've had. Other models I have had, slowly release pressure while it reads, this one seems to read as it applies pressure and once it hits max pressure, displays the reading and releases pressure. No squeezing and then holding your arm hostage. I took it to my drs office with me and it was relatively close to the reading the assistant received taking my bp manually in each arm. I'm happy with that. The only real down side i've found to this unit is that i can't seem to save multiple users, where my old one had user 1 and user 2 storage. Pros: Quick bp reading Bluetooth functionality As painless as possible Cons: haven't found a way to track multiple users yet
