Book is a Christmas present.
I am sure he will enjoy it as penguins are his favorite animal except for dogs. (The family has five rescues.)

Intro to chapter books for Kindergarten
My 5 year old started to want more story than picture books offer, so we tried this short chapter book first. Overall, there was no language, scary scenarios, or bullies to worry about. The only exception is in the first chapter - there is a scene with a mean kid, but that was the only one in the whole book. The rest of the book is pretty easy going. The story was charming and wholesome. Personally, as an adult, there was too much convenience in the plot for me to find it enjoyable. There are also several typos in the later chapters. But my kid really enjoyed the story and that's all that matters. We've since read it several times. For those wondering what to read next, we started the Zoey and Sassafras series. Highly recommend as they are imaginative, science-y, and not scary.

A kindhearted story that teaches good values and some science
Bought this (as an audiobook) for my 4-year-old because she loved "Mr. Popper's Penguins," a childhood favorite of mine. She loves this one even more, to the point of obsession. The gentleness of the original shines through in this book -- aside from one chapter with a bully, every character treats others with kindness. I appreciate the way it corrects the misguided ecological thinking of the original (relocating the Popper penguin colony from the Arctic to the Antarctic). A very nice book for small children to middle-school readers that honors the classic it updates.

Disappointment
This review contains spoilers of the novel. I was hoping within this novel to find the same magic of the original Popper Penguins. However, I was rather disappointed with the storyline. Two children find eggs hidden in their new home's basement. The eggs hatch and Nina and Joel struggle to figure out how to take care of their baby penguin chicks. They pretty much immediately get caught with the chicks by their mother. They decide to transport the chicks to Antarctica with the help of the Popper Penguin Foundation. Transport is quickly arranged and they are off. They end up hitting rocks on their boat ride due to one of the penguins messing with the navigation system. They almost ran out of heating in the hut they find (it belongs to a caretaker of the Popper Penguins). There are many different conflicts, however, the conflicts are all easily handled without too much difficulty and there's not a lot of character growth. Furthermore, you don't really grow attached to the characters as they don't overcome or really struggle with anything I much prefer the original. It seems to be trying to push an environmental agenda without doing it well. If you have an early reader who's trying to read it themselves it might work because as a reader you're able to encounter a difficulty and solve it quickly. If you're using it as a read aloud for your children there are better novels.

It's a good followup to the original story
After reading the first book and watching the movie with Jim Carrey, we found this. It was a really nice add to a cute story.
