The One Dog Training To Own If You Only Buy One
I have a number of dog training books (25 or more) and have trained many dogs of different breeds over the years. This book is one the best collections of dog training techniques you can buy. In spite of the title, you definitely donβt have to have a retriever or other type of gun dog in order to become very proficient at training any breed of dog with this book. If you are not training a gun dog, just skip over those sections. Everything else will be relevant. This is the best dog training book in my library.

Great supplemental tool
Great training book so far. Some of the descriptions of training methods aren't as precise and detailed as I would like and seems to be written for those who have had more experience training retrievers before. It gives a great overview though but as a layman, and for the layman, I prefer a training program that is more intuitive. I would recommend this as a backup book and reinforcement for the book "Training Retrievers for the Marshes and Meadows" by James B. Spencer. This is how I am using "The 10 Minute Retriever." It works as a great supplemental tool and has a few alternate methods that might be helpful if a dog were to be unresponsive to the plan presented in the former book mentioned. Good quality book over all though and I would definitely recommend this for any retriever trainer from the beginning trainer, as I am, to a more experienced trainer.

no nonsense guide to retriever training
I thought this book was quite good. It doesn't contain alot of fluff, and it's clearly aimed at setting the basis for serious training with the potential for highly difficult tasks like those found in modern retriever field trials. You won't find a lot of feel good advice about having your dog sleep in bed with you. (On the other hand, I don't think it hurts to emphasize what can happen to a kennel blind dog).I bristled at first at the grounding in Skinner and behaviorism as my own feeling is that the application of behaviorism to human psychology has had destructive effects in that arena, but actually it is very well thought out and sound. This book will definitely have an impact on my own training, including with adult retrievers. I'd recommend it as a solid, solid book on training retrievers from two people who obviously know how to train dogs.

Great resource for shaping a happy, enthusiastic retriever!
I have a 6 month old black lab puppy that isn't going to be used as a gun dog, but we were hoping that he would be an eager retriever to play with. Maverick was interested in a tennis ball, but not crazy about it and if there were any distractions around, he would ignore it completely. Between getting a training bumper that he was much more enthusiastic about and utilizing this book, we now have a well-behaved, enthusiastic retriever. The book is full of helpful, practical tips and for the most part it's focused on positive reinforcement. A great resource!

Book
Good book. Good insight for beginner trainers. I strongly believed in keeping sessions short even before this book but this only supported the fact. Keep it fun with clear and consistent training... a dog will bout do anything for ya. Also enjoyed their real life stories from training dogs over the years. Illustrates how each dog is different and should be approached the same in terms of training.

Sure, why not?
Itβs a solid training resource. I followed it and my CBR is a good retriever.

Never read it. The dogs can retrieve without a book.
Just a so, so type of book. Not a total waste of money. Now that I taught the dogs on my own, maybe I can throw it in the pond. Oh, the days of real book stores when you could stand in an aisle reading the book and then put it back on the shelf.

AMAZING TRAINING BOOK!!!!
I highly recommend this book as it breaks the training down to what is most successfully. 10 minutes a day is one of the best ways to train a dog, especially for retrieving. I enjoyed how this book was broken up with true stories about the authors experience with their own dogs and it brought a lot of life into the reading of this book. The photos and diagrams were very helpful as well. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I would recommend it to anyone working on training any type of dog for retrieving.

Good advice within; the Real Dog Stories added little as do the demand for a set number of word in this review.

Best book for trainers
Very good book, easy to follow and learn the steps necessary to train a good retriever. Would also recommend Retriever Training: A Back-to-Basics Approach.
