Learn from the author's experience!
This is a book that gives professional insights, detailed notes, and read-with-caution insights that will guide you through your journey in building your home. The author offers how to be your own contractor from experience and also highlights how to avoid the pitfalls and mistakes previously made by the author, which I believe is an excellent way to learn from someone who has actually built houses on his/her own. That being said, this book is written by someone who has real-world experience and offers every bit of advice needed to navigate this experience successfully. I would recommend learning how to be your own contractor from someone like Kris Land Get this book if that is your goal!

Such a bad idea for a book!
I'm a big fan of DIY to both empower oneself and save time/ money, but this book is just unrealistic and down right dangerous. In theory, yes, let's all build our own homes, and most of us could likely figure it out-eventually. But this book is very misleading. Unless you have a construction background this book is not for you. I've done my share of extensive remodels, mostly as my own GC, sometimes I save money, sometimes I don't, I rarely ever save time. But BUILDING a whole new place from the ground up is it's own monster that should not be taken lightly. There are permits, plans, easements, setbacks, city limitations that can change every year, the list goes on and on. You'd have to engage with licensed contractors to get most of this accomplished, hence the 'expert advice' badges all over this book. Then there is a section on finance. No, your bank is not going to give you a construction loan with out a licensed GC, unless you have extensive experience building houses (i.e. you yourself are a GC).Save your time and money, find a book on DIY finish work you can do in a new build- it lets you add your own touches on your house where it really matters. You can take on the molding, paint, flooring, kitchen/ bathrooms, etc. but leave the actual structural work to the professionals.

Neat concept for a book
This book is really about helping you be your own general contractor. If you are simply looking for advice on working with a builder, or design ideas for a new home, there are other better books. But if you want to learn about the pitfalls and tips involved with being in control of the build, you should read this book.

This book is phenomenal! We had so much anxiety over building our new home and my husband is a project manager for Army Corps of Engineers and retired military however, he thought he would attempt to GCI the building of our home on his own. He had so much anxiety about doing this UNTIL I found this book for him! The information is great info and such an easy read! My husband read half the book the first time he picked it up because he could not stop reading it! Great book with GREAT INFO! Thank you so much we will be buying your other books as well. You just need to make a check off list book now! ❤️

Good Basic Book to Help with Building Your "Dream Home"
This book helps break down the many steps on building your next home -- or your dream home as the author describes it. The book is like having a super-smart friend guide you through everything, step-by-step. It actually makes the idea of being your own contractor and saving a bunch of cash feel totally doable, not like some impossible dream. The guide breaks it all down so you know what to do and how to do it, from figuring out the money side to hiring the right people. It's written in a really easy-to-understand way, so even if you don't know the first thing about construction, you'll feel ready to tackle your project.

If you would love to build your dream home you need this book.
Kris does not only cover every single aspect of building a home, from foundation to framing to electrical to plumbing to roofing to cabinetry to patios to decks to inspections, but he scores an ingenious balance between staying broad enough so that this book can help you with ANY home you want to build, but also specific enough that you never are wondering what to do next.Kris Land shows you how to plan out your project so that you can pace yourself, not missing a single detail and also not get stuck waiting for materials to arrive because you didn’t realize how long it takes for a particular item to show up or to be completed. This book will also show you how to find and vet subcontractors, how to decide when you do and don’t need a sub-contractor, and how to keep your home-building project from turning into a disaster. But even more than the tools and planning, this book will blow oxygen on your passion for a dream home. You can’t read this and not get excited about taking on perhaps one of the most fulfilling projects! And yes, you can save $50,000 doing it yourself but that is probably an understatement.Every DIY home builder needs to read every page of this goldmine.
