Q: Does this work for french polish in woodworking?

the grit is superfine, that it prob will work. I use it in my products for exfolliating the skin, as its so fine that you really don't feel it. So it prob will work as it won't scratch the surface harshly.

Q: Can this be used for soap making?

NO not at all. it is too gritty for skin. the dental pumice is called superfine because it is compared to fine, medium and coarse pumice. try baking soda, that is powdery fine.

I don't know what mesh grade. But it's a rather fine powder, called Superfine grit.

I don't think there is any real difference
