Funny movie to watch!

In my opinion, this is one of the best films ever made. The way Mr. Lundegaard and Marge Gunderson's lives and values unfold as foils is poetry. Mr. Lundegaard is so selfish for money, he has his wife kidnapped. Not only that, he lies to the kidnappers, asking $1 mill from his father-in-law, but giving the kidnappers only $40k. And not only that, he completely forgets how this kidnapping will impact his own son!Meanwhile, Marge and her husband enjoy a quiet, peaceful life together. Contrast her with other police officers in film and television. So many action heroes are portrayed as so devoted to their work that they neglect their spouses and families, and are all around morally questionable at best. But Marge just does her job. She and her husband are irenically satisfied with their average, unexciting lives. Unlike Mr. Lundegaard, they do not suffer from the anxiety of guilt or cheating people for a few bucks. They do not live double lives or constantly feel on the run because they have nothing to run from.And all of this is set in the backdrop of "Minnesota nice," a culture of people known for friendliness, politeness, and external positivity, but who nonetheless are no different than the rest of humanity. Think of all the scenes deliberately shot to convey danger and/or debauchery one moment, and then the very next shot is an overly-polite smiling face. Mr. Lundegaard embodies it perfectly. He is a spineless fraud, a cheat, a liar, a deceiver, a kidnapper, and a murderer, yet he tries to maintain all the external niceties of his culture. But then you see Marge Gunderson, who is "Minnesota nice," but real. She reflects the mannerliness of her culture, yet she is brave, self-respected, and holds herself with dignity.*Spoiler Alert*It all comes full circle in the last few scenes. Peter Stormare's character is so depraved, he murders 5 people just for a car and $80k, even putting one of them through a wood chipper. "All that for a little bit of money." Then, to close, the consequences of Lundegaard's choices and Marge's choices are deliberately contrasted. Mr. Lundegaard dishonorably, desperately, deplorably dragged down by police officers, the shame palpable on his face as he cries in agony. All the while his own father-in-law lies in the trunk of his car. Think of his son. Think of how selfishly irresponsible this man became, and how he single-handedly destroyed so many lives.But then we see Marge and her husband quietly curled up in bed. He didn't get his painting on the first-class stamp, but that's alright, they're "doin' pretty good." Just before the credits roll, they softly affirm their love for one another as they look forward to the birth of their first child.It is wisdom set to film. It is judgment for a fool to get what he wants and grace for a wise person to get what they want. It is grace when a fool is denied what they want and discipline when a wise person does not get what they want."The path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day. The way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know over what they stumble.""Whoever is steadfast in righteousness will live, but he who pursues evil will die.""The desire of the righteous ends only in good, the expectation of the wicked in wrath.""Whoever is wicked covets the spoil of evildoers, but the root of the righteous bears fruit.""Better is a little with righteousness than great revenues with injustice.""The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion." - the Coen brothers begin True Grit with this proverb, and it fits here as well.May we all learn to take heed to the wisdom this film expresses.

Fargo never disappoints even after five seasons. In fact, when we finished the fifth season, we went back and watched the first and second seasons again because we saw them a long time ago. Even though we remembered the endings, they were still enjoyable to watch. The writing is outstanding, and so is the acting by every episode ensemble (which changes from season to season, with the exception of one actor who shows up in two seasons.) We really love the semi-hidden references to the original movie and previous seasons. If had to rank each season the first four would get an "Excellent", with the fifth season an "Outstanding". If you've seen Juno Temple and John Hamm in other shows, (e.g., Ted Lasso and Mad Men), you'll be stunned by the characters they play in season five. But, don't start there; do yourself a favor and start with season 1, or the Coen's movie, "Fargo". This is top quality television.

Short and sweetThis movie is no longer than it needs to be.It gets to the point without a lot of unnecessary padding of the plot.Goes from serious drama to dark comedy.Also,no horrible CGI.

I have seen this movie 3 or 4 times and will, no doubt, rent it again. I know the plot inside and out, of course but I never get tired of watching the actors play their parts. This movie has some of the best acting I've ever seen; performed by every actor who plays a part in the movie.

Considering the current state of Fox (Disney owned) I would not recommend buying any physical release from them or similar big studios unless its a pre-Disney acquisition much like their 2011ish release of One Hour Photo. It's clear they are putting out lukewarm bluray and 4k bc they want ppl paying for the Disney+ app to fund those horrible MCU/Star Wars affairs. And considering its now one year since Shout announced their 4k release and still no updates on a release date this almost ten year old release is a a great buy(this is not just a bluff from Shout as they hold a physical release deal with MGM studio titles of which Fargo was originally produced as). Mid 2010s era 20th Century Fox and MGM Blu rays were strong releases with ridiculously high average bitrates(this one is steady at 31mbps picture compression and 3-4+ mbps on the 5.1 sound. They were also mastered to BD50 discs with only a couple trailers for special features to allow space for their generous compression rates. No troublesome DNR or sharpening is present which is crucial for this film since there are many scenes with insane contrast and many night scenes(think snowscapes of blinding white and barren, unlit state highways with snow-covered towns and pockets of neon lit businesses as the only nighttime light sources) which benefit from a grain field being left intact. Not once do you see blocking or shadow aberrations in pitch black winter night scenes like you will when streaming this particular master on any online service. Details in hair and clothing, facial textures and effects like stubble on Stromares character and blood and cuts to Buscemis face, snow covered ground and car metals and upholestery textures all have natural filmic looks and enough detail to feel immersed. Sound is well presented in its native 5.1 dts master, with great separation. There is clear and present dialogue (a Coen brothers film focus) and well mixed foley from feet crunching snow to gunshots and the infamous wood chipper scene which plays sound to comedic effect. Until shout release their 4k, this is a great buy for one of the Coen Brothers best films, a picture I personally put on a very short list of what I consider holistically "perfect " films.

It’s hard to believe that 25 years have passed since Fargo first appeared, fully establishing the Coen Brothers as innovative filmmakers coming on the heels of Blood Simple and Raising Arizona. Having seen the movie several times, it continues to be a fresh, hilarious 98 minutes of black comedy – a perfect combination of memorable characters brought together in a story with its relatively little dialogue frequently punctuated with “you betcha’s” and “yaa’s”. The performances are superb, topped by Frances McDormand’s Oscar winning role as the pregnant police chief, Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare as the inept kidnappers and William H. Macy as the car salesman whose life builds one problem on top of another, but the whole cast blend perfectly together to create a highly entertaining, sometimes brutal, tale.The film also succeeds visually, with the bleak, snow covered North Dakota landscape perfectly photographed, with this BluRay presentation capturing its sharp, bright images. For anyone enjoying quirky tales start here, though it's hard to imagine that there are still those unaware of Coen Brothers’ movies.

Der sechste Film der Gebrüder Coen bedeutete für die beiden den Durcbruch. Obwohl mir schon die Filme vor FARGO gefallen haben, können sie hier ihre Zusammenarbiet endlich krönen. Mit dem Oscar für das Drehbuch. Und die wunderbare Frances McDormand bekam ihn. Mehr als verdient!Fargo, es ist eine kleine Stadt in North Dakota, die Geschichte sollte dort 1987 wirklich passiert sein. Aber, das ist nur ein "Gag" von Coen's, am Ende schreiben sie seelenruhig, dass jede Ähnlichkeit mit wahren Personen...Wie bei den anderen Filmen (The Big Lebovski, ein Jahr später, hat das zur Perfektion gebracht und gezeigt), zeigen sie auch hier das Ge­sche­hen an mehreren Ebenen. So kann der Film ziemlich blutig sein - FARGO ist es; die nächste Szene zeigt dann zwei Menschen, die im Bett liegen und sich über eine DREI-CENT Briefmarke unterhalten...Das gehört zu den genialen Einfällen der beiden Filmemacher.Der Film wurde 1996 gedreht, bekam also zwei Oscar und zeigte, dass sich eine gute Zusammenarbeit immer lohnt. Hier führt die Regie Joel Coen, die beiden schrieben das Drehbuch, Ethan war als Produzent tätig.Bis heute arbeiten sie Hand in Hand, haben einige Schauspieler/innen, mit denen sie mehrmals gedreht haben. Wenn die Coens rufen, dann kommen sie - John Goodman, Jeff Bridges, John Turturro, Billy Bob Thornton und und. Die Elite, eben.Zu dem Inhalt (der Spoiler ist nicht so wichtig): Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy) ist Autoverkäufer im Geschäft seines reichen Schwiegervaters Wade Gustafson (Harve Presnell). Der "Alte" mag den schmierigen Schwiegersohn nicht, er hällt ihn für einen Nichtsnutz. Aber, er ist mit seiner Tochter Jean (Kristin Rudrüd) verheiratet und sie haben einen Sohn. Jerry will das große Geld verdienen, bisher hat er nur Schulden angehäuft, von denen der Schwiegervater noch nichts weiß. Er sieht in Shep Proudfoot (Steve Reevis), einen Mitarbeiter, der gerade aus dem Knast gekommen ist, eine Hilfe. Der sollte ihn mit zwei Männern bekannt machen, die eine fingierte Entführung seiner Frau durchführen sollen. 40.000 bzw. später 80.000 Dollar würden sie bekommen. Und einen neuen Wagen sofort. Jerry wird aber seinem Schwiegervater sagen, die Entführer wollen EINE Million!Es eilt, weil Jerry seine Unfähigkeit bei dem Verkauf nicht mehr verstecken kann. Er hat Schulden, das würde der Alte erfahren und es wäre...Die beiden Ganoven Carl Showalter (Steve Buscemi) und Gaear Grimsrud (Peter Stormare) sind wie Tag und Nacht. Carl schwätzt ohne Punkt und Komma... Grimsrud ist still und sagt in einer Stunde höchstens "Ja" oder "Nein". Sie entführen Jerrys Frau. Es geht ziemlich schief..., man findet auf ihrem Weg zu dem Versteck (ein Haus im Wald) drei Leichen. Die örtliche Polizei-Chefin Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand) hochschwanger, wird zu den Leichen gerufen. Sie ist eine patente Frau, die systematisch vorgeht. Bald ist ihr klar, was in der Nacht passiert ist. Sie kann auch den Wagen identifizieren, den die Ganoven von Jerry bekommen haben. Doch, der ist sich sicher, dass kein Auto gestohlen wurde, es fehlt auch keines. Komisch, dass er Verkäufer einen Neuwagen nicht vermisst.Jerry "kommuniziert" inzwischen mit den "Entführern". Er soll und will das Geld vom Schwiegervater den Männern selbts übergeben. Zuerst scheint es zu klappen, das Geld ist da, aber Jerry ist in seiner Rolle wirklich ein Versager. So bringt sein Schwiegervater das Geld...und wird, man sieht es...Die Polizei ist noch immer nicht über die Entführung im Bilde. Jerry schweigt, als ihn Marge erneut besucht...und flieht vor ihr.Langsam fügen sich die Teile zusammen, die Räuber sind so grundschlecht, so schlecht, dass sie der Polizei die meiste Arbeit abnehmen. Aber, leider auch machen!Marge, die ein bischhen Heldin spielt, fragt sich: "Warum war das notig? Das Geld? Die 80.000 USD?"Sie ist Polizistin, ehrlich und wundert sich über die Schlecht­heit der Menschen. Und das tut sie mit großen Augen, in denen Fragezeichen zu sehen sind. Man glaubt ihr. Sie wird eine gute Polizistin sein und noch besser werden, eine gute Mutter, eine gute Ehefrau und Mitarbeiterin, aber einige Fragen werden sie immer beschäftigen. Oder, sie wird die sich nicht stellen, weil sie die Antworten nur zum Teil wissen wird und will...Der Film zeigt die neblige, schneebedeckte Landschaft Minnesota), die Sonne zeigt sich manchmal fast scheu durch die Wolken. Eine "einfache" Polizistinn ist eine der Hauptpersonen, die mit großer Kombinationsgabe und wunderbarer Art die Fragen stellt. Ruhig, sie entschuldigt sie sogar für ihre Anwesenheit, aber sie erfährt in nonverbaler Kommunikation viel mehr. Sie kann zuhören, auch denen, sie sonst nicht viel sagen. Wer würde in einer Frau, die dazu noch schwanger ist, eine sehr gute Detektivin vermuten? Wenn man sie dann kennen lernt, ist es zu spät. Man sagt schon mehr, als man will und soll, wenn man ein Ganove ist.Frances McDormand ist in der letzten Jahren zu einer der besten Schauspielerinen gewachsen. Ihre Rollen sind selten leicht, sie spielt sie mit einer Präsenz, die mich immer aufs Neue verwundert. Auch William H. Macy als Jerry wird immer besser. Er hätte schon längst einen oder zwei Oscar gewinnen sollen. in "Boogie Nights" (1997) hat er eine Nebenrolle gehabt, er war (wie der Film) grandios.Auch ich bin eine von denen, die den Film beim zweiten Mal (das ist jetzt das dritte..) besser verstanden habe, oder wenigstens versucht habe, ihn zu verstehen. Ich nahm ihn nicht so ernst. Ernst, würde man sich fragen - neben so vielenLeichen...und bei solchem Thema?! Wenn man versucht, die Geschichte als eine "schlecht vorbereitete Entführung" zu sehen, kommt man zu den Personen, die alles, aber wirklich alles, falsch gemacht haben. Jerry ist ein Loser, er kann nichts richtig machen. Wie er so lange mit seiner Unfähigkeit die Geschäfte machen konnte, grenzt an ein Wunder. Die beiden Entführer sind zu nervös und deswegen gefährlich..., man hat den "Kindern-Pistolen" in die Hand gegeben und ihnen ihre Funktion nicht erklärt.Besonders Carl Showalter, den Steve Buscemi perfekt spielt, gehört zu den besten. Man mag ihn nicht, er ist schrecklich, aber, wer kann 24 Stunden seinem un­un­ter­bro­chenem Ge­la­ber zuhören. Dann Peter Stormare, der den "smarten" stillen Killer Gaear Grimsrud so gut spielt, dass man sich leicht vorstellen kann - der hat irgendwo einen richtigen Film gesehen; z.B. "Der Pate"...und will jetzt so einer sein.Jede Person in Film hat eine komische Seite, die wie ein Blitz einschlägt, und dann geht es wieder weiter.Man durfte den Film auch als eine schwarze Komödie sehen, oder? Obwohl, es wäre schon besser, man würde mit Wasserpistolen ballern, aber, das geht nicht. Ist eber ein Krimi (Thriller)...Ansehen, es lohnt sich!Mein Dank geht an Ray, der eine wunderbare Besprechung schon am 22.9. 2017 geschrieben hat. Sonst sind die Meinungen sehr verschieden. Das kann ich nachvollziehen. Etwas schwieriger kann ich verstehen, wenn sich die Rezensenten über die UT ärgern, über DVD-Qualität, das gehört nur zum Teil zur Rezension. Noch weniger kann ich verstehen, wenn sie über die Serie Fargo schreiben, den Inhalt aber bei diesem Film posten. Die Serie ist sehr gut, das IST aber DER Film. Etwas ähnlich, aber..., nein...,man kann sie nicht verwechseln.

Fargo is a film you will love or hate. There's no middle ground.It's an ararchic mess that captivates from start to finish.The 4k bluray is decent. There are better looking 4k than this and there are much worse looking too.However, picture quality isn't the main reason you'd want this film.It's a perfect social comedy and satire.That should be enough for anyone.It's certainly enough for me.
