As long as the portafilter you are using is 54mm then it should work just the same.

I have the notsek 51mm and use it in a 53mm basket. you think one in 53mm would work better or 2mm space doesn't bother? i think it doesn't.

yes I think 53mm would be better then you may not have channelling anywhere hope this helps

Is this supposed to be completely flat? I received mine a few days ago and it is a bit convex (pointy) in the middle and the ouside slightly higher.

Yes in my opinion it should be flat. Mine is. Level with the top of the coffee grains in the portafilter basket.

The Barista Express is a 54mm portafilter so you want the 53.5mm one.
