Clicking with Your Dog: Step-by-Step in Pictures (Karen Pryor Clicker Books)

Both the dog and I love it!
Your browser does not support HTML5 video. I have a "joint custody" arrangement with a neighbor for her Toy Yorkie. I make a reference in my video to the book that inspired me to get this one, but I gave the name incorrectly. When I read "Reaching the Animal Mind" by Karen Pryor I decided that clicker training was the approach that we should take with Bella and my neighbor agreed.Bella wanted to play-bite way too often, so we taught her how to play-bite on command and then gave her the command for "don't bite". It has worked in real life. The same with barking and some other puppy issues. This is not a quick-fix (although they do learn the tricks in an amazingly short time frame) but instead it is a template for teaching your dog some alternative behaviors. Bella knows quite a few additional "tricks" but here I show some of her favorites. I hope that this video is helpful. perfect
if you want one book to help you train your dog, buy this one. If your friends, neighbors or family get a dog, buy them this book. If you do the stuff in this book, you and your dog can't fail.I've read many books on animal training- most very good. This book stands out as the ultimate instruction manual to get you and your dog (or any other animal) on the same page.

Specific training for many dog behaviors
As a new dog owner I had my hesitations about all the clicker hype, but this book has been very helpful in breaking down the process of training specific behaviors and the psychology behind behavior training overall.

Fast training with this fun book
I got this book with my new puppy and was tremendously impressed with how fast she learned to do things. It works great to tell her when she is doing the right thing. I wore my clicker attached to my belt loop all of the time when she was young but only take it out now when I want to try to teach a new trick (She is now 2 years old). She perks up immediately because she has learned how to learn and that learning new things is fun. People are always impressed when she picks up her toys and returns them to the basket. She can weave through my legs as I walk, go in reverse, spin, play dead, and do all of the standard things like go to her mat, sit, beg, lie down, roll over, open a door, and many other things. This book works mainly by drawings so you know right away what to do. I loved it and sent a copy to my nephew as soon as I heard he had gotten a puppy. If you want more words and background information, then buy The Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson The Culture Clash: A Revolutionary New Way to Understanding the Relationship Between Humans and Domestic Dogs . I would start with Clicking with Your Dog first or get both at the same time.

EXCELLENT!
I recently ordered and received Clicking with your Dog, Clicker Training for Obedience, Fun and Games with Dogs, More Fun and Games with Dogs, and 101 Dog Tricks: Step by Step...Of these six books, Clicking with Your Dog is my favorite because the text is easy to follow and the very abundant illustrations are very clear and self-explanatory. There are sections on teaching "Manners" (being well-behaved), "Practical Skills", "Useful Tricks and Games", as well as others. The book is well organized. When this book arrived, the glue in the binding wasn't holding some of the pages right, so I spoke to an Amazon rep. who e-mailed to me a prepaid UPS label to return the book in exchange for a substitute. The same day (today)that Amazon received the defective book, I received the replacement. You can't ask for service better than that.I rate it 5 stars for the book and 5 stars for Amazon.

I Only Wish I'd Written It!
The ideal training guide for everyone; especially those who don't have time or interest to sit down and pour through long blocks of text, or highly technical writing. Tillman's clear, concise, easy-to-follow illustrations make comprehension a snap, for every type of learner. This is the book my students find the easiest to follow, and it's absolutely marvelous for children. Feedback from dog training students I mentor worldwide consistently note that the book's presentation style makes it impossible to put down. Because each chapter can be read individually, those who like to "skip around" instead of reading from beginning to end will still find it simple to follow the step-by-step directions. The pictures are clutter-free, elegant and simple, helping the reader focus easily on the behavior being shown. One example of its effectiveness is how accessible it is for those with learning disabilities. My husband, severely dyslexic, cannot read blocks of text without great difficulty.Yet, I was able to randomly open the book, give him a clicker and treats, and watch him "shape" the behavior just by following the illustrations. He didn't need to read any of the accompanying text (which is concise, without a wasted word) in order to get the behavior from the dog.Students with Attention Deficit Disorder find Tillman's book to be a guide written just for them: it moves so quickly, is so simple and easy to follow, that there is no time to get bored, no time for the mind to wander. ADHD students who have never been able to make it through other fine training guides seem to relish Tillman's book from beginning to end. It's just plum FUN.Tillman's message all the way through the book is that training a dog should not be stressful for the dog or the human, but a dance of joy, fun every step of the way.Of all the books I have recommended over the years, this is the book I am wildly enthusiastic about, as it opens up the science of shaping behavior to the casual pet owner as well as the serious performance enthusiast.Void of techical terminology that sometimes confuses those just learning how to clicker train, Tillman present science in a way anyone can understand--have a darned good time, to boot!Tillman not only addresses teaching all the basic behaviors for "good manners," but shows how to solve behavior problems without resorting to force, coercion and pain. How effective do I think Tillman's information is? With the information presented in this book, I was able to turn around a fear-agressive dog who went on to win the National Service Dog of the Year award, as well as become a certified therapy dog. When traditional correction-based training only made his problem behaviors worse, it was following the guidelines Tillman offers that saved this dog's life and helped him become such a phenomenal service dog, therapy dog, school demo dog and marvelous, loving companion. And, he was the first toy breed service dog to help carry the 2002 Winter Olympic Torch!Buy the book. Give it away to friends who have dogs with problem behaviors. Buy it for yourself, your kids, for people who are frustrated in their attempts to change unwanted behaviors into wanted responses. It works. Oh, does it work!

Very easy to follow
Very easy to follow, and I love how there are different methods- if one didn't work for my puppy, one of the other methods did. This is actually the second copy I've purchased.

Great book. Was recommended by my vet
Great book. Was recommended by my vet. I love the fact that there is a short condensed version in the book to start with the training right away.

Easy to understand and follow
This book is great for clicker training. It gives you the choice of sitting and reading before the training or take a little look at the pictures. It's really easy to understand and doesn't go into to much information about reason for clicker training. Has lots of different tasks/behaviour to click. Really fun book and recommend to every dog owner whether a beginner or already has experience :)

Can I do this for real....?
Best clicker manual I have seen. You still need a bit of clicker knowledge becasue it is a light version so not all info is given. Having said that the addition of instructions and PICTURES helps to make this book more accessible than others you can buy and I have KP's training book, the Animal Mind book but they don't do what this does.

Good if you are completely new to clicking
The things taught are fairly basic. Some good ideas, and although I understand the concept that you can click to teach anything your imagination allows, I would still like some help in that department. Probably wont use as much as I thought I would based on the reviews.

easy to follow instruction book
A first rate, easy to follow instruction book. A 'must' for anyone (like myself) using clicker training for the first time
