Thank The Goddess! At last a film that reminds us where it all came from
Thank The Goddess! At last a film that reminds us where it all came from, from The Great Mother, not from a 'god the father'. How refreshing it was to watch a great series of books represented, at least in part, by a very good film. Stellar and Lunar aeons have given way to the present solar/god cults but here is a glimpse into the divine feminine; with enough 'dominant cinema' devices to ensure the dragon (Stellar constellation of the ever-circling feminine principle) does not scare the object-needy viewer off. Romance and chivalry with more than a touch of silk. I was unfortunate enough to watch the Swedish film, "Arn, Knight Templar", the night after this. How low and dull they seem, the regular, dominant cinema films of this genre; with the exception of John Boorman's "Excalibur", I can think of no near-match for "The Mists of Avalon". For a man, watching this was an eye-opener, the likes of which have only been matched in the last 5 years by reading David Ray Griffin's books, "The New Pearl Harbour" and "The New Pearl Harbour - Revisited". Recommended for those who want to know but beware, they are eye-openers and there is no going back, afterwards.New Pearl Harbor Revisited: 9/11, the Cover-up and the Expose; as are the books by Gerald Massey, the original heterodox Egyptologist, and the hero of Felix Holt: The Radical, by George Elliot, a man who saw that The Goddess had long been established by the time of the solarites; the one-godders.

Love this film, which is all about women.
I got a good quality pre-loved DVD. I am very happy. Now I can sit down with a good cup of tea in front of one of my all-time favourites, and lose myself in the mists of time....

Relax around the little details and enjoy the film
If you are a great fan of the book and you are a purist, you might feel a bit disgruntled in places, but I take the view that it is a fantasy book any way and not an historical novel so it doesn't have to be exact for me. I thought the casting for Lancelot, Guinevere and Arthur could have been better but this is largely because we have a tendency to build our own personal images for the characters we grow to love through reading imaginative stories. It would be impossible to please everyone. However, the casting for Merlin, Morgana, Morgeuse, Gorlois, and Vivianne are excellent. This is a very atmospheric film and very convincingly persuades the viewer that it all really did happen. Very magical in places, the feeling of mysticism is true to the book and some of the scenes of Avalon are very beautiful. The pagan rites at Beltane are stirring and speak deeply of the Old Gods. Highly recommend.

What a tale
First things first: I consider Marion Zimmer Bradley's book 'The Mists of Avalon' to be my bible. However, this is a film and as such a different medium and story altogether. Bear that in mind when you watch it.So if you don't expect this series to be a word-for-word adaptation of the book then you will hopefully really enjoy it like I did. This is still a great retelling of the Arthurian legend from the point of view of Morgaine, usually cast as the 'evil witch'. Here, she is a loving sister tried throughout her life by both the demands of the Goddess she serves and the politics of the times. Angelica Houston as the Lady of the Lake is wonderful, and Julianna Margulies as Morgaine manages to make you feel for everything she has to endure. Avalon comes to life beautifully with swirling mists and high rising cliffs, as does Arthur's Britain. I struggled a bit with some of the male characters though; Edward Atterton's Arthur was slightly too modern for me, and Michael Vartan as Lancelot was a little bit too far on the clean-cut side. Mordred comes off as the truly bad guy without the depth of the book's character, although Hans Matheson's portrayal helps to make you feel that with his particular parentage (brother and sister) you can see why Mordred would be messed up.This mini-series will not enter my list of 'greatest series ever made' but it has a firm place as a really enjoyable escape into a different world, with characters that have plenty of struggles to live through for you to connect with. And it is a film led by strong women - for that reason alone it deserves praise!

The Mists of Avalon.
Forget the negative comments about this movie, it was one of the most enjoyable movies regarding Arthurian i have seen in a while besides the truly wonderful "John Boormans" classic telling called Excalibur. great scenery and a haunting sound track that fitted nicely to this movie, as i no longer have a multi regional DVD player this has to sit on the shelf until its released on a format for us in the uk, a great movie, i loved it.

Fantastic
How I missed this film in 2001 is beyond me, maybe I was away in Avalon at the time. The book, means so much to me that I was worried that the film may not hold true. However, allowing for production I feel this film does a perfect job.Wonderful, convincing action perfect roles.Lose yourself and see the whole story from another perhaps less fictional view point

A great movie
I was put off from get this video by poor reviews. But actually, while no match for the book, it most certainly was a lot better than I was led to believe. I enjoyed watching it... enough said.

I was delighted
I did not read the book, but I was truly delighted by the performance of all actresses and the story line that now gives so much more credibility to Avalon and the Arthurian legend. And if I'm talking about credibility it's because I know as a fact that many aspects of the Ancient Mother Goddess Religion that has been introduced to the audience through this movie are still follow and use by many pagans of our modern world. Thus, this movie is the most realistic and plausible about the subject that has been done so far even if the existence of Merlin, Arthur and the Avalon Sacred Island are still subject of great debates and still demanding to be proved.Don't mistake me, I'm not pretending in any kind of way that this movie is comparable to any serious historian books or documentaries. But the few true details added about the Ancient Mother Goddess Religion and the battles against the invaders of the time are refreshing and provided a marvelous entertainment.I fell for that movie and I now plan to read the book.

Based on the mists of Avalon book by Marion Bradley
Doesn’t quite capture the storyline in the book by Marion Bradley which is the best Arthurian retelling
