Completes the portable sharpening kit
I bought the Gatco portable sharpening kit. It's fine for outdoor equipment but to sharpen cooking cutlery, you'll want the extra-fine stone as well. The ceramic, pull through, style sharpeners can't hold water to the diamond sharpeners and this extra-fine stone. My only wish is that they guide bar collapsed all the way into the handle the way they do in the portable set. There doesn't really seem to be a need for the much longer guide. I may just cut it and re-shape the end myself.

Good addition to the basic set
Good addition to the basic set. After using the Gatco system for years I bought a Spyderco Sharpmaker and am not going back. With the Sharpmaker you can see what you’re doing and there is no honing oil slurry flowing into the lock mechanism.

The finishing touch
I bought a Gatco Edgemate that came with Coarse, Medium and Fine hones. That was my choice and I should have spent the extra money for a set which included the Extra-Fine hone.In case you haven't figured it out by my giving this hone 5 stars, it really helps to refine the edge. There is one hone that is actually finer than this one but this gets me where I want to be with the Gatco. I sometimes use an 8000 grit water stone afterwards and even a strop after that but the Extra-Fine hone gets me a lot closer to those steps than the Fine hone ever did.

Works good, but the finishing hone is probably a better optoin
This works great, but I bought ceramic finishing hone shortly after this and it is way better if you ask me. This is a good step, but the finishing hone is needed to put a mirror polish on the edge.

Good stone
Used with the sharpening system, this stone is great. The overall flaws of the system itself apply, though the stone is top notch. I use it for kitchen cutlery, and it gives a great edge. I wish there was room to star this edge in the system case--there are no empty slots. Otherwise, it works as intended and gives a great, consistent edge.

So far ok
Have not had this stone long. Can't give much feedback other than to say the difference between finishing with this and finishing with the "Fine" stone is 30-40% on routine quality kitchen knives.

Gatco Extra-Fine Sharpening Hone
This is a Gatco GA15006. It arrived sealed in a Gatco blister pack marked as 'Extra-Fine Sharpening Hone'. A worthwhile investment for anyone who is a bit obsessive about sharpening blades. The hone itself is mauve in colour and includes a guide rod. Confusingly the hone itself carries the embossed legend 'Ultra Fine Finishing Hone'. This is a 600-grade grit hone, the next finer stone to the red Gatco GA15005 'Fine Sharpening Hone'.I've used the Gatco system for about twenty-five years and consider it superior to the Lansky system which I've also used. The Gatco GA15006 gives a very fine finish which will please anyone wanting a superior blade polish. The next finer hone to this product is the pale blue Gatco GA15010 'Ultimate Finishing Hone' which is a 1200-grade grit hone. The GA15010 hone is also embossed 'Ultra Fine Finishing Hone' which initially caused me—and many others apparently—some confusion. Be reassured that the hones are different grades of grit.

The missing link...
