Charles Drew: Doctor Who Got the World Pumped Up to Donate Blood (Getting to Know the World's Greatest Inventors & Scientists)

This is my favorite book in this series. It was very interesting on many levels. I liked that it covered his discoveries, as well as his personal character, and challenges. The books in this series are all great! If you try to research many of the inventors and scientists in the series based on articles on the internet, you'll find that they are frequently written on a level well above what an elementary school student can understand. This is particularly true of Luis Alvarez. These books are well-written, include fun illustrations, pictures, and cartoons, and are easy to understand for children. I would say they are on a 3rd-5th grade level, and they are about the right length to cover the basics without becoming tiresome for kids. Well done!

This book provides more historical information than I could easily find online. It was perfect for my daughters 1st grade project!

This is a great book for kids: well written, great mix of illustrations and photographs, our 7 y.o loves it.

Mike Venezia's books are a favorite in our home. We have his entire collection. This book is highly recommended as an introduction to Charles Drew.

We have a fairly comprehensive collection of these books - my daughters love them. HOWEVER - Why are there not more female subjects and people of varying ethnicities in these books? For example - why not write a book about Elizabeth Blackwell - the pioneering female doctor? It's frustrating to my girls when there are so many wonderful female historical figures who are overlooked. Don't even get me started on the composer/musician category. NOT ONE WOMAN! We love these books - just wish they were more diverse...

My son loves learning about scientists and inventors and this series is a fun way to do that. The drawings are funny and the story is told in an interesting way.
