Main Street Vegan: Everything You Need to Know to Eat Healthfully and Live Compassionately in the Real World

Amazing, inspiring and the best book I've read in a long time
"Vegans are cool and plant-based dining is hot."If you're only going to read one book this year - pick up Main Street Vegan. It will change your life. It is so much more than a book about being a vegan, it is a book about being a compassionate healthy person - the very best you can be. I actually cried reading this book. I almost never do it, and for a non-fiction book to affect me that way. I am so inspired by Victoria Moran and I will definitively pick up her back list."Much of Main Street Vegan is light reading and light of heart, about great food, looking good, and feeling fantastic; but parts of it may be tough going, especially if you're reading for the first time about what the animals go though."This book cover everything from the animals, the ethics, the compassion, the love, the food, the clothes, the honey, the circus, the make-up, the wine, the kids and includes a lot of delicious recipes. I read this because I was curious about going vegan - now I am sure that I'm ready for the transition. It covers everything I worry about: going to restaurants, travel abroad and dealing with non-supportive surroundings. The main message is that everything you do is great - even if it is to start with meatless Monday."The idea is to do this, either all at once or in stages, in a way that's comfortable and fun, improves your health, makes sense in your actual life, and lasts forever."The book is written for new vegans, but I imagine that I will go back to this wonderful book many times and I am sure it is a great inspiration, reminder and boost also for long time vegans. There are so many amazing parts - I am glad I got the kindle edition so I could make (a lot) of highlights! However, I am off to buying the hardcover edition as well - I must have it on my book shelves as well. I cannot emphasize enough how much I loved this book. I want to give it to everyone I know but I will take Victoria's advice and don't push it onto people. I would recommend it to everyone, except maybe if you absolutely want to be able to eat you meaty junk food without thinking about it.5++ stars!"The bottom line is: This is not difficult; it is just new. New and wonderful."

What a book. A must have for anyone with a soul.
This is a great book. I wasn't a vegan when I started reading though I had stopped eating meat and was very curious about veganism. I am not even half way through the book and I have been a vegan now for 2 weeks and never intend on going back to meat or animal products. I love how the author talked about this controversial and sensitive subject. I am an animal lover, grew up with horses and dogs. I have a rescued dog so I care alot about animals and the way they are treated. I wish I had known some of this information long ago I would've never continued to put animal products into my mouth all these years. I feel horrible that I did. Veganism isn't ever talked about and is tip toed around as if it is not right or vegans are extremists. I don't believe that is true at all. Animals are here with us not for us and are treated as disposable beings here to feed us, clothe us and nourish us. It is disgusting and veganism has changed the way I grocery shop, clothing shop and see the world.I also love the recipes at the end of each chapter. I haven't tried any yet but I intend to once I finish the book. This book is super informative about how to switch to a vegan diet and get all your vitamins and nutrients so your not sitting around starving wondering what to eat. There is a whole new world out there being a vegan. I love every second of being vegan and this book is an absolute must have for anyone thinking of going vegan or is curious about it.

A Comprehensive Overview
Despite a few criticisms, I would suggest this book before any others in the genre (excluding cookbooks) for anyone considering a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle. To date, I have found no such book that would receive a full five stars. What the authors do well is to alleviate the sense of guilt that some of us carry around, either self-inflicted or from listening to too many messages. This is the guilt that sounds like, "some vegan you are, still wearing leather boots" or "if you were a real vegetarian you would refuse that soup that secretly contains fish broth." This is the authors' largest contribution, as being bogged down with a feeling like we are not "perfect" vegans or vegetarians is what allows some to spiral and return to eating meat. Instead, the Morans impart the belief that we are all on a path and attempting to do better. Forgive the slips and move on. If you are choosing this lifestyle for ethical reasons, they write, your heart will eventually lead you to make right actions.Having been a vegetarian for decades, a lot of the content was old hat for me, but it was information I gleaned from a number of sources. Those new to this lifestyle would benefit, no doubt, from having so much in just one place. Every chapter ends with a recipe, if you need more of those. What makes this book great rather than perfect is that many topics needed more depth. Again, for a beginner this may not matter. I don't think the authors necessarily rush through the material. Personally, I just would have preferred more details everywhere. There is a fairly extensive resource section, as well as the inclusion of URLs within the chapters.

a seasoned perspective
I'm a long time vegetarian / vegan and yet found much to enjoy in this book. I thoroughly enjoyed the way that Victoria presented the information in short chapters covering key dimensions of the vegan diet. I thought that the idea of including a recipe that supported the topic of each chapter brilliant. Her approach is light, yet the perspective is very seasoned and thorough.... a sign of a master of her subject.

Excellent book to help you transition to veganism, especially if you're on the fence. So easy to read with short chapters and humour weaved throughout. Great facts, not preachy, great recipes.
