Perfect size
Got four of these to put into craft kits I set up for myself and as gifts for some others. They are great for this purpose, Not overly big but big enough, and I love that they have the cover over them when not in use so they don't get dirty or scratched.

5 diopter, NOT 5X
[Added "hole" comment to 3rd paragraph 7-1-19]These are a diopter of 5, not 5x. Diopter is the inverse of the focal length in meters whereas the magnifying power is diopter divided by 4, plus 1. So these are actually a 2.25x lenses. A lens with a diopter of 5 has a focal length of 20cm or about 8". So if you want to set something on fire you hold one of these 8 inches from the thing you want to burn & shine the sun through the lens. It does a good job of starting fires with direct sunlight. They are glass, though, and my steel tweezers don't scratch the lenses. At 2.3" diameter they are a nice size for reading things. And you don't need to get real close to something to use these. I posted a photo showing how much some text on a SanDisk package is magnified with the lens 3" above the package. The magnified image appears to me around 2x the original and it is very clear. The best viewing distance will be determined by where your eyes focus. With my bare nearsighted (and now fixed-focus) eyes that 3" distance is about the best with my eyes also about 3" from the lens. But with my glasses on, fixed focus at long distance, I need to have the lens 5"-8" from the package and my eyes that far or more from the lens, and I can get a bit more magnification. The cover is plastic with a soft, sort of fuzzy, interior. The plastic ring can be easily pried off of the lens if you want to have it by itself or mount it in something else (see second photo). I was also able to easily pry the rivet apart with a pair of steel tweezers, so you could remove the rivet and put the thing on a chain as someone asked in the questions (see 3rd photo). What I actually wanted was something with a focal length between 25mm & 35mm (magnification of 8-11 or diopter of 28-40), so I intended to stack the 2 5x lenses to get what I wanted. So at 200mm focal length these are useless for my intended purpose but I think they are worth keeping for other uses.

great for your purse
I purchased this glass for my 79 yr old mother who is loosing her sight. When at home, she often uses a magnifying glass to read fine print, but when she is out, at the store or bank......this glass will come in very handy for her.

The verdict is out
Do advertisements for magnifying glasses ever tell the truth? I don't think so. I do know that these lenses are NOT five-power, but they might still be adequate for most purposes.. I bought them to carry around with me in my pocket or in a belt wallet, and the next few weeks should tell the story Maybe 2-power is enough for what I'll be using them for. We'll see. There is a scientific way to determine the power of a lens but, in my opinion, that method is of little or no practical value to most people. What we ordinary people want to know how many times does the lens magnify the object. That's the only measure that is of any value. By that standard, I'd say that the lens here magnifies the object less than two times. These lenses may or may not turn out to be satisfactory for most purposes, but they certainly have several good points: The lens diameter is excellent, much better than much more powerful lenses: 2-3/16" This is EXCELLENT! The price is sensational. They are very compact, very handy. The image is very clear. There's no fuzziness. Of course, that is also be true of window glass. Are they worth the price? That's what I'll be learning in the next few weeks. It could be that 2-power is enough for most purposes, but that can only be learned by by daily experience. Sure, my first thought is that more power the better, but that's not necessarily so. A more powerful lens that is difficult to use, or prohibitively expensive my not be a better lens for the average user. So, as before, I can only say, "we'll see" at this time. Anyway, I'll be back with my final opinion. I might be surprised.

Great for kids to take on nature study!
We love these. We even popped the revet out and added a cord to make it a necklace to wear doing nature study.

I like them
Large enough and strong enough on magnification. Handy to have for fine print.

not 5x.
If this is a 5x magnification it is badly over rated.
