Modern Calligraphy Workshop: The Creative Art of Pen, Brush and Chalk Lettering

Good tips for the creative process and recognizing common stroke angle problems. I also like how the author poses some questions in each section to help you critique your own work. Some info is very repetitive and written in a voice that's too casual/conversational and hard to understand as a reading. I would have liked to require this book for students in the college typography course I teach, but the writing does not come off as professional.Other info is just plain missing. For example, in the Amazon description it says "Among other things, you will learn to...digitize your work for printing." I have read the book cover to cover and could not find this section. I'm really disappointed because this was the main reason I purchased this book.The brush lettering and hand lettering sections could be greatly expanded instead of including the project ideas section: the instructions and ideas in the back of the book are fairly vague and feel like a re-hash of the same idea (acrylic marker on different glass objects or 3D objects).Lastly, and I have never had this happen to a brand-new book, the book cover completely separated from the text block. Fortunately, I have experience making books and have a tabletop book press, so I was able to adhere the cover again, but it was unacceptable for that to happen to a new book.

I am a freelance illustrator (mostly watercolors) and lately I've been intrigued by calligraphy and fauxlligraphy. I play around with different pens and styles on my own, but I wanted a nice printed book explaining the ins and outs of modern calligraphy. I love this book because it gets straight to the point, it's an easy read and the whole book is well organized. I like how the author explains different ways you can apply calligraphy to just about anything, even glass or rocks. And she also tells you the products she uses too, without it sounding like an ad. The book cover is pretty, and the length of the book is just right - not too short, not too long. My favorite part is the examples of brush lettering alphabets she includes in full pages so you can reference them and practice on your own (I just use an old sketchbook). I normally don't buy art books but I'm glad I got this one!

There aren't a lot of modern calligraphy books this one it's beautiful and has lots of information and techniques, Imogen offers multiple choices to each character, this book it's thick because along the beautiful pictures it explains Lots of do's and don't, it's really a manual of Imogen's unique and distinctive modern calligraphy style do not expect this book to adhere to rules like copperplate the style is off the baseline at all times. I recommend it if you love a very free flowy style rather than flourishes and more pointed/copperplate like styles.

I am new to Calligraphy but felt this book was very helpful in guiding me with answering questions and giving examples that I needed. I am sure as I continue to grow in my new found hobby, I will view this book as a good source for guidance. It is very easy to understand and in many cases gives you a variety of options.

Not very impressed with book. I have been teaching calligraphy for years and bought this book for some new ideas. The letter is poor and I feel this book was written in a rush. I do not recommend this book.

just what I was looking for

I did a modern calligraphy workshop with Imogen at Quill London after struggling to progress with my calligraphy alone and it was an informative, fun and friendly session. I left with tips (how I held the pen, how I sat!) and confidence to continue so when I saw Imogen had a book due out, naturally I had to buy it.I feel like I'm doing the class again - it's refreshed in my mind some of the things she taught. What's surprised me is how much MORE there is in the book - chalk lettering, brush lettering, alphabets to trace and be inspired from; all written in an easy to understand, straightforward way with great diagrams and beautiful photos.Buy this book. Buy two copies 'cos you'll probably splatter the first copy with ink as it's going to be on your desk a lot as you write.Thanks Imogen - great great book. Love it.

The content of the book is fine, but I’m certainly not pleased with the copy I received. However as it was from Amazon (not the marketplace) I can’t see where I can leave feedback on the vendor. Basically it was clear when it arrived that it had been very well thumbed and was certainly not new, and on the first time I read it the cover came off the spine!The book is still readable and I could mend it, but I’m seriously tempted to send it back because this is not the new copy I paid for. Will be very reluctant to order books from Amazon again. Disappointed, but clearly not the fault of the author.

This is by far the best book on modern calligraphy I have seen. I am a beginner and it tells and shows you everything you need to know. It has been invaluable. It also moves on to other projects, making your own inks, stationery etc once you feel more confident. I have a few calligraphy books and this beats them all hands down.

Very happy with this book. I have others and they are a little... dull. This book however, is laid out well for beginners ans those who have been practising a shiet while. Plus it has wedding ideas, chalk lettering and general lettering support. Win win really!
