An Inside Passage (River Teeth Literary Nonfiction Prize) Paperback – May 1, 2009

I bought this book after working with the author as my advisor during graduate school. While I already appreciated him as a teacher, I felt it was a deep honor to get to know him better through these essay. Sensitive, warm, serious, but often witty and funny, too, this author gets at the heart of what it is like to be a human being and to learn to know oneself through one's environments, one's travels, one's relationships (or failure of relationship) with others, and one's solitude. Gorgeous prose that gets the reader in touch with empathy is, I think, one of the highest values of good literature, and Caswell's work rises to that level.

This is a wonderful book full of introspection. Written as a series of vignettes that travel the globe and the life of the author. Non-Fiction and a book that will make you think about life and how it ought to be lived.
