A&A 15" Magnetic Wooden Chess Set/Folding Board / 3" King Height German Knight Staunton Chess Pieces/2 Extra Queen

This is a great chess set. I'm new to chessboards, so I've read the reviews, and this is my personal judgment. My board came without damage. All pieces are good. The inlay that the pieces sit in was not glued down the best, but it still fit snugly (by my own choice, a smidge of double-sided tape now keeps it in place). I've bought the chess and checkers set. They are all magnetized to a good standard, making it travel-friendly despite being a big board. Overall, you are getting a good deal with this set for its quality. Definitely worth the money.

This is a high quality chess set to please players of all levels. It arrived in a sturdy carboard box, not a single mark or dent. Inside this box was a 2nd box and within this a cardboard slleve. Inside this was the Chess set in the display box customers see on shop shelf. Within this the chess set was wrapped in a felt wrapper. I knew just from the way it was packaged it was going to be a quality chess set. Onmce I removed the chess set from the sleeve i was met with a beautiful smooth set. Maple and Walnut inlay! Each playing piece was well carved. Ea.sy to distinguis each piece. 2 Queens so an extra Queen of each colour. My first thought was this must be the wrong item and I have been sent a chess set worth 3 times than the one I bought. Quite honestly I do nkot know how they can make it at such a low price. Attention to detail is first class. The set comes with each piece having its own moulded home inside the box and comes with a checquers set. I am blown away by the quality. MY Wife and I are keen to start playing chess again. I can fin no negatives, if you want a Chess set as a beginner or an experienced player this is a great choice. Worth every penny.

Although this item has just arrived, a review is in order as it concerns the quality of the various items making up the whole package rather than it's use as a chess or draughts game. After all, the quality of the game is entirely down to the players, eh? :-) I was really surprised at how well-made everything in the package is; and the fact that its all made of high quality woods with no blemish or structural faults visible. Even the hinges and the catches on the fold-out board are of good quality, not the usual misaligned thin pressed plate that bends or falls off with the first opening. The veneer and stringing making up the playing surface of the board is also immaculate. The chess pieces are not the highest quality available but they're well-shaped, smooth, properly proportioned and made of solid wood with a decent "varnish" finish. They're much better, though, than just adequate or satisfactory. For the money, they're very remarkable indeed. I could find only one tiny fault - one of the knights has it's magnet sticking out the bottom a little, pushing off the baize foot-disc, as the housing for the magnet has not been fully drilled out. Soon fixed. The board with this set isn't itself magnetic, by the way, but it's perhaps useful that the pieces are, so could be used with a full size magnetic travel board, where you want the pieces to be immune to being shaken off their positions by a railway train swaying or whatever. All in all, exceptional value and quality for the money. NB Subsequent investigation reveals that the metal "rounds" in the foot of the pieces, under the baize, are not themselves magnetic. I presume that the magnetic board-sets have a magnetic sheet under the board squares that attract the metal rounds in the feet of the pieces. The set I bought is the non-magnetic variety.

very nice board and pieces and both the chess pieces and checkers are magnetic which is not the case with all sets , also the knights are well made and look good. No funny eye sockets. They are a nice shape. very happy except for the stick on numbers and letters that go around the edge, I’m not even going to try to put them on in case I make a mess of it. And I find the clips on the board a bit difficult to close.

Excellent quality, better than I expected

After countless searches on ebay, tried Amazon and more or less found this set straight away. It was double the price of my precious searches, but looked like a quality set. It also specified the dimensions of each pice, which was important as I was looking for large pieces. The set arrived 2 days early than stated and the artractive outer box had a rigid cardboard inner and the wooden box/board was further protected by a soft plastic bag. The quality of the wooden box and pieces justified the price. The pieces feel very comfortable and the magnets even hold them if the board is inverted. Separate homes for each piece is great for checking none have escaped from a particularly bad game. Also included is an instruction booklet that also describes some of the common mates. Stickers are also provided for the younger player, but I would keep the set for an adult player and get a cheap and cheerful set for the very young future fischer. Looking forward to taking the set to the next chess evening at my local cafe and being the envy of all. Unfortunately my skills at the moment don't match the quality of the set.

Great chess set, price and delivery speed.

I never write reviews but I was compelled to with this item. I had got the £20 GGIE chessboard on Amazon before this, which was a massive let down in almost every way. So I did loads of research to find a better board at a reasonable price and found this, and honestly, it exceeded my expectations. Both the chessboard and pieces are absolutely beautiful. I got the weighted pieces (I find magnetic ones feel a bit cheap and childish.) They weighed more than I was expecting, and provide that satisfying "thud" when you place them on the board. The felt is thick too, not a piece of paper like on most pieces this price. This comes with the newer style pieces, which look when more elegant than the ones in older review photos on here. The gap in the board is honestly almost invisible, and more importantly, I can smoothly glide pieces over it. It came with notation stickers which I was hoping for, but now I'm undecided whether to use them as the board looks so beautiful as it is.
