Quality Piece for a Good Price
So far I am very pleased with this inflow pipe for my aquarium. This is used with a Fluval 306 canister filter.Another reviewer had mentioned a difficulty in tuning the skimmer float. The skimmer relies on a float which is essentially an air bubble. The amount of water drawn from the skimmer is a function of 3 variables [The volumetric capacity of your filter pump, the adjustment of the lower flow plug and the amount of air in the float for the skimmer]To adjust the air in the float simply use a plastic pipette to slowly add or remove air from the bubble to obtain the amount of flow you desire.Honestly the manufacturer should include this in the package, how much could it cost? $.05?It would be nice if the flow plug and skimmer were glass but maybe it's better they're plastic.Very nice overall, glad I bought it.

Beautiful but fragile
Even though I read many reviews stating how fragile this inflow was, I still wanted to give it a try. It arrived well packaged and it was easy to install. It was beautiful for the first few weeks.Over time, algae would grow on it as expected. There were times the skimmer would get sucked in and would cause a blockage to the primary tube. I would pull the skimmer out, give it and the inflow pipe a good scrubbing. However, I wasn't able to clean inside the primary tube. Initially, I tried to pull the bottom piece with the rubber stopper off, but it wouldn't budge. I tried to carefully pull the entire inflow out of the aquarium to try to clean it and it broke. I had it for 4.5 months. If you do not plan to remove the inflow after installation, this is a great product. However, if you desire to pull it out to clean it please be cautious as this is a very delicate unit. It will get algae in it if placed near natural light. The skimmer works great, but at times would get sucked up by the inflow causing a blockage.Instead of reordering, I decided to order the stainless steel inflow with skimmer variant. It seems this is what people who have used both the glass and stainless steel recommend.

A must-have for cannister filter users
I've been using this for about 8 months now and LOVE it. LOVE it. If you have a canister, replacing the regular inflow with one that includes a protein skimmer is a must. I never knew just how much surface was on my tank until it wasn't there anymore. This skimmer does a fantastic job of keeping the surface clean, but be aware that it also does a great job of pulling food into it before your fish can eat it. I had to up the bio-filtration of the Fluval 306 canister filter I have it attached to in order to help compensate for the food being sucked in. I now feed 2 to 3 times per day, but only a little so as to minimize this issue while ensuring my fish have enough.Someone mentioned the intake having issues remaining at the surface. I ended up tying a small ribbon around the intake and leaving it there, with the body of the ribbon hanging out of the tank in the back. Occasionally something would happen to the air bubble under the intake and cause the unit to sink. Prior to the ribbon, I've have to take the entire lid off and pull it up, only to have it sink again. Like it was taunting me! (lol) After tying the ribbon on, it was easy to give it a little tug and have it pop right back up. Once I calmed down the surface agitation from the other filters, this stopped being an issue for me.Why 4 stars? 3 reasons (1) It's glass. That looks really cool and all, but I just shattered mine today. Ugh. Now I'm getting the stainless steel version. It's more expensive, but buying 2 glass ones is more expensive than a single stainless steel one. The intake piece is acrylic. Too bad the rest of it isn't as well.(2) The intake piece for the bottom is a nifty design in that if I rotate it then the inflow is adjustable. Alas, trying to clean it popped the base right off. I've given you a picture. I was trying to figure out how to repair this when I knocked the glass body of the piece off the counter and it shattered on the floor. ... problem solved? The design would be much better if this end cap were a snap off or a screw off for easy, thorough cleaning. Instead, it's bonded into place and attempting to clean it can break it.(3) The upper curve is too narrow for a larger tank. This wasn't an issue on my 45-gallon, but the lip of the 75-gallon is broader. Trying to squeak it on/off was quite harrowing. I fully expected it to shatter in my hands, but it never did. Just be aware of this if you have a larger tank you want to use it with.(4) It is held in place with 2 suction cups on the outside of the tank. While that's a great idea in theory, these suction cups do not adhere to anything but glass. I have a decorative backing on my tank, so the glass is covered and these suction cups work for all of 5 minutes. I ended up having to tape it into place, which made for un-fun on cleaning day.Overall, I LOVE LOVE LOVE this piece and can't recommend it enough ... with those caveats in mind. The great functionality offsets any annoyance, imho. When I purchased this one, the steel version wasn't available. Now it is and it looks like they've taken most of the issues I've had into consideration and solved them with the new steel version. I'm concerned that the curve of the tube is still too narrow for the beefier tanks, though. We'll see.
