I was a bit skeptical of these pickups because in the typed description they are advertised as humbucker sized, but the pictures obviously show a P90 size pick up, and the dimensions in the picture shows them to be 85mm wide. The pictures are accurate, this is a P90 sized pickup. Before I get into my critical review, you should know my experience with P90s. I have never played a guitar with Gibson P90s. I picked up a Epiphone Jr Special with P90s and fell love with them. From what I understand they lack the output of Gibson’s, and are more midrangey and smooth. Either way, I was nailing the classic Sabbath tone, and getting creamy Santana lead tones. Then I wanted more P90, so I put a set of Duncan Phat Cats in a Squier Jagmaster. Those pickups in that guitar are extremely bright, and full sounding, and I’m getting killer surf tones with it, and when I roll off the tone knob, I get tones more similar to the epiphone. Then I picked up a ‘94 Ibanez Talman, that came with Kent Armstrong hum canceling P-100s, which get a nice crunchy rock tone, similar to P90s, but closer to mini humbuckers. Ultimately they lacked the output and high end sparkle I’m looking for. That’s where these pickups came in. These had the plastic chrome covers like my Ibanez pickups, so visually they are exactly the same. They installed fairly easily, but the bridge pickup has a wider string spacing, great for Gibson type guitars, but I had to modify the adapter plate on my bridge pickup. When I tested the resistance the neck came out slightly hotter than the bridge, 9.57 for the neck, and 9.52 for the bridge. I just had to set the neck pickup a little lower to compensate for volume. My tone analysis is that they are way hotter than the pickups that I replaced, and a tad hotter than the Phat Cats. Being hotter they do have more 60 cycle hum, but not too bad, on par with the Epiphones. They are a bit brighter than the Epiphones, but not nearly as bright as the Phat Cats. Actually the Phat Cats give excellent clarity and note definition, which brings out the nuances of your playing. These pickups did not sound as vibrant, but some of that could be the guitar itself, because the Ibanez sounds a little darker acoustically. Overall, these pickups compare favorably with pickups costing 5x as much. If I paid $200 I might have gave 4 stars for tone, but for $35 these are 5 star pickups all day long. Probably not an upgrade to your Gibson, but maybe an upgrade to an Epiphone, at least in material, since tone is subjective. Would be great for a DIY project guitar, but if you happen to have a vintage Talman with P100s, and you get same day shipping on your birthday, these couldn’t be more perfect!

I'm a builder of custom guitars for over a decade.. I try various pickups as a hobby I guess.. Looking at hese pickups, the first thing that comes to mind is build quality.. They look like there made by a machinists. The underside can pass for billut aluminum. Overbuilt but very welcome.. Before installation I thought. They have to sound awesome. Why would someone put so much effort in the build and fail on sound.. There in my jazzmaster(yes they fit perfect with no mods).. Low end is deep but not muddy..mids and highs are on target without being shrill or piercing. I drop the treble to 7 or 8 but that's the guitar and my taste.. Bottom line. You can get the sound your looking for with minimal adjustments.. They scream with overdrive or distortion.. If your putting them in a Fender or squire Jazzmaster.. Take off the chrome covers and place pickup in existing jazzmaster covers.. Looks stock but sounds awesome. Again use the stock white JM. Covers.. Then put the remaining chrome covers on any soapbar P-90.. No downside here.. Put them in and shred away.... Peace

I gave these a try and see if I was gonna like p90 style pickups. I was surprised that they sounded great. Seem to be made of quality material. I normally like single coil pickups in my strats, but wanted to try something different and glad I did.
