Squirmy Wormy: How I Learned to Help Myself

A great "quick read" to help explain a child's "quirks" to adults who may not have any experience w/kids w/sensory issues
This book is perfect for what I needed it for. I wanted a quick read that would help familiarize other adults with some of the characteristics of my 8 yr old son's condition (pervasive developmental disorder, not otherwise specified). It is short so you don't feel like you are imposing on people by asking them to read it. Great illustrations make it enjoyable even for kids. I wrote a little note in the front of the book that said something along the lines of "Thank you for taking the time to read this book. Hopefully it will help you understand some of my behaviors that otherwise might be baffling. Love, Aidan" I also wrote little notes in the book if there were areas that didn't pertain to my son, like the pages on hitting, pinching, and biting since my son never does those things. I didn't want the teachers/aides/camp counselors/gymnastics coaches/swim instructors etc to think he might start biting or hitting people so I made sure they knew he didn't do those things. Of course, it is valuable information to have if they ever come across a child who is on the more severe end of the spectrum,so even though some things didn't pertain to MY child, those things are still helpful for the adults to know. My son attended a little summer camp run by a Montessori school last year, and the teachers found it quite helpful. They also said it helped them to understand another little boy's behaviors who hadn't been diagnosed with anything yet but obviously was dealing with some sensory issues. Highly recommend it!!

Books for kids
I highly recommend buying Squirmy Wormy: How I learnd to help Myself. It is an excellent book. The book was entertaining yet informative for the children. They loved it. It helped the children make sense of some of their friends and themselves when hey squirm around at circle time.

It's helping my kiddo.
My kiddo was recently diagnosed with SPD (Sensory Processing Disorder), and with the help of this book I've been explaining it to him and how he can help himself and help us to help him. It's working. He loves the book (I omit the part at the beginning about Autism because my kiddo doesn't have that) and he can see how the kiddo in the book is like him and how that kiddo helps himself. Via the book he's started requesting us to squish him and to do heavy work to help him regulate.Thank you to the Author for this book.

Fits any special needs child
This book was suggested by another parent of special needs children but I have found it to be extremely helpful in understanding our child. Our child is a product of meth and therefore is unique and cannot fit into a box. Squirmy Wormy explains how she feels and why. My child is exhibiting alot of the sensory deficits explained in this book and the book makes it sound so simple. Thank you for a great book for parents and educators as well.

A great explanation for my Children!
My youngest son who is 2 years old was dignosed with Sensory Intergration Disorder. I bought the Squirmy Wormy: How I Learned to Help Myself on a reccomendation of his Infant Development Specialist who stated that would help me to explan my son's condition to my older children and other family members. Let me just say this was a great buy for us! I am better able to assist my son with his Sensory Intergration Disorder and my older children have a better sense as to what is going on as well.

He Likes It!
I read the preview online & the reviews before buying this for my nephew. He really loves it. I haven't had the chance to read it with him yet, but I have heard rave reviews from him & his sister. I think it helps him to know he is not the only one with sensory issues & he can relate to the boy in the book. I look forward to reading it with him soon.

Happy Teacher
Not such a happy teacher. The story is cute and does a good job explaining why some children behave the way that they do, to other children. However, even at Amazon's discounted price it is still grossly overpriced for what it is. Again this is when not being able to see and hold and examine a book before purchasing it, is a disadvantage .

Enjoyable book
my 4 year old son who has autism, adhd, and spd seemed to like this book. He related to the offered solutions in the book such as jumping on his trampoline when he just wants to go fast, which is something he has done for awhile. I think it was helpful for him to hear that another "kid" does stuff like him

A great book , relevant easy to read
This will be a very useful book to use with children who have sensory issues. Its written in a clear and direct way which will enable children and their carers to connect and recognise their sensory issues and provide them with self help strategies.

Not enough of a story
Suitable for age 4/5. Did not flow as I thought it would & did not engage my 3 year old grandson who loves books.
