Engaging Earth Science Kit for Children Interested in Rocks and Growing Crystals
This Thames and Kosmos Kids First Kit is essentially the same as the Thames & Kosmos Earth Science : Crystals, Rocks and Minerals. We have both kits and my 8 and 10 year old enjoyed doing the earth science activities. I think that parental supervision is needed for this kit. I read through the clear, easy to understand instructions prior to my children starting the labs. For best results with growing the crystals, you will need distilled water. Some of the crystals take at least a week to start growing, so be patient and have the kids check the solution daily. There are 6 crystal growing labs in this kit. All of them worked out for us.There is also experiments involving rock testing, making paper models of crystal shapes and two plaster-based activities. Making the plaster geode filled with alum crystals takes a couple of days but my kids enjoyed doing it. The sand and plaster layered experiment was also enjoyable for them to do. This is a nice earth science kit for children that is fun and educational at the same time.

Item was used
This was a gift and I can’t return since it is time sensitive. It’s still usable but far from new. Also missing a cup and number 14 plastic pipettes. I can’t believe this is marked New!

Have Fun with Rocks and Minerals
My 8 yo grandson and I had a blast with the kit. He enjoyed trying the mineral testing procedures, but the crystal kit was a lot of fun. We got enormous alum crystals and some very nice Copper Sulfate crystal. The Potassium Cyanoferrate didn't turn out quite as nicely. My only minor complaint is it would have been nice to have more of the Copper Sulfate and Potassium Cyanoferrate to repeat experiments, but, more importantly to be able to create a supersaturated solution as that forms better crystals. That works really well for the alum.

Educational and fun
This kit is very helpful with hands on demonstrations of concepts in crystals and minerals. The labs are fun for our 6th grade daughter with Down syndrome and easy to follow with adult support for safety. The Crystal making labs yield beautiful results. Highly recommend!
