Second greatest hits album by the Canadian R&B singer, specially curated to be released in anticipation of his Super Bowl LV halftime show in February 2021. The album comprises tracks from his three Billboard 200 number one studio albums: 'Beauty Behind the Madness' (2015), 'Starboy' (2016) and 'After Hours' (2020), his debut mixtape 'House of Balloons' (2011), his EP 'My Dear Melancholy' (2018), and his two co-lead collaborations 'Love Me Harder' and 'Pray for Me', with Ariana Grande and Kendrick Lamar respectively, from the albums 'My Everything' (2014) and 'Black Panther: The Album' (2018). Review: Weekend - What fantastic tunes Review: A Brilliant Modern day Michael Jackson - I guess like many others I was mesmerised by the 'blinding lights' song on the radio - a marvellous catchy piece of 80s style synth pop. No kidding, I thought somebody had transported me back to 1985. In fact, before I knew who the artist was, I spent a great deal of time going through old film soundtracks - beverly hills cop, miami vice and 80s compilation albums, wondering how I'd missed this one back in the day. Imagine my surprise when I found out The Weeknd was... a rapper essentially. I thought about buying just the mp3 for 'blinding lights' or maybe a cd single. But this compilation album was reasonably priced, so I figured - why not? Seven of the tracks on the album - 'Save your tears', 'Blinding Lights', 'Can't feel my face', 'Starboy', 'The Hills', 'Call out my name' and 'After Hours' are outstanding and veritable classics in any genre. Each track stands on it's own as something you could build a whole movie around, or at least would make a great theme song. The other songs on the album are gradually beginning to grow on me. How to describe The Weeknd's music? It's a mishmash of different genres: hip hop, rap, easy listening, 80s synth pop to name but a few. But rap is apparently where he begun, and you'll hear distasteful 'rap' elements on some of the songs - women refereed to as 'bitches', and the n-word which is taboo for most of us, but not the rappers it seems. Don't let the risque stuff put you off though, you've got a music genius here I would say - Someone who can seemless weave through different musical genres, and come up with catchy outstanding songs that anyone could hum along to and enjoy. His singing voice is resonant and expressive too, and hits all the right notes. I have to thank The Weeknd for transporting me back to the 80s with 'Blinding Lights', and the video that accompanies the track is amazing - check out his youtube page. I wish I could say The Weeknd was a recent discovery, but... alas, a few years ago I heard the powerful and atmospheric 'The Hills' on maybe an advert, Tv show or film, and was blown away by it. Sadly, I never took the trouble to investigate further, and that was that. Well, better late now than never to properly discover The Weeknd, and proclaim myself a FAN. And what would they call that - a Weeknder maybe? So, yeah, The Highlights is a fab introduction to the music of The Weeknd, but you could almost feel cheated for not buying the original four albums. There's a lot more to be discovered on his youtube channel.

302. Some Weeknd for the weekend
As "Blinding lights" enters a staggering 62nd week on the US Billboard Hot 100, and just ahead of his headlining the 2021 Pepsi Super Bowl LV Halftime Show on Sunday, The Weeknd drops his first collection of hits, an 18-track, 77 mins long compilation called "The highlights". Some singles are inevitably left out (prolific Abel), 2 songs ("Pray for me" with Kendrick Lamar, and "Love me harder" with Ariana Grande) previously not included on his albums are to be found on here (thoughtful Abel), and no new material is featured (stingy Abel). The music is excellent, but a physical release that offers a lot more than just a poster would be fitting. A basic greatest-hits then, "The highlights" could have been a release to remember for years but, as it is, serves as a reminder of how brilliant The Weeknd's music is. XO PS: Glad to see that his bruised face has healed 😄
