Compelling book, easy to read
Whether you are a patient or medical professional, Dr. Cowan brings up some compelling points to consider about heart health/disease, alternative treatments, nutrition. This book will be helpful for anyone who is interested in cardiac health. I found it to be a fascinating read and plan to order some of his other books.

illuminating and inspiring
Dr Cowan interleaves stories of his life with what he's learned about health, healing, and the heart. His stories take us with him on his journey, from childhood experiences with tachycardia and heart irregularities, through his stint in the Peace Corp, the surprising and transformative experience of discovering the works of both Weston Price and Rudolph Steiner while living in Africa, his experience with anthroposophical medicine, and his continual search for how to help people truly heal (instead of just treating symptoms).I’ve been working on my own health for years now, and have come to many of the same conclusions as Dr Cowan. I expect his prescription for a healthy diet and lifestyle will help the people who follow it, as I’ve seen the results first-hand.But I also found much that was new to me, from an exploration of how the structure of the heart is shaped by its function, ideas about how the heart really works and integrates with blood transport, a description of the mechanics of heart attacks that is very different from mainstream concepts, but which makes total sense and fits with everything else I’ve learned. The book speaks to more than the mechanics of how our bodies work, also talking about our spiritual nature and our connections to other people and the nature that surrounds us. The book leads naturally to more questions, and new paths to explore, and I am much indebted for these signposts!Highly recommended.

Thought provoking information, but no practical application provided
Interesting Book. It kind of wanders through a few different topics at points, but this book may challenge you to some extent if you are intellectually curious. In sum, however, the book falls short on providing many details on how to heal heart disease. Nonetheless, it was worth my money and time, which cannot be said for most books written on this subject.

Right to the heart of the real matter
Dr Cowan has unearthed one of those things that we, as human beings , had deeply buried in our “Descent to civilization”.

Very Good Book on How to Improve Heart Health!!!
This newly released book is an exceptionally great read on "how the heart works and what to do about improving it." I think this is an especially good book for baby boomers! I have used the recommendations (diet and herbs) to help improve my blood test results (better Chol, stopped BP meds., over all blood work is much better). Dr. Cowan's logic and recommendations are a bit different than what the American Heart Association would recommend and for me that is the point. I am having dramatically more success following his thoughtful recommendations. My take is that Dr. Cowan, is an extremely smart and broadly educated MD so he can draw on information (scientific, personal, and experiential) from several areas in the broad topic of heart health. His logic and research track with other forward thinking pioneers in the heart health field, but his book is a very easy read! He can discern and explain what works, what doesn't work, and why from both a medical and a chemical/biological perspective.I gave him 5 starts because the book and information is that good, but he does briefly rant against the industrial age which I am quite happy to be a part of! If you do a search on his name you can also find papers and podcasts while the information is much more fully developed in his book.

An interesting read.
I enjoyed learning about an alternate way of understanding heart structure and blood circulation even if it was hard to understand. The main point I needed to understand is the important role the Vagus nerve plays in our body.

Fascinating and thought provoking book.
Be aware that this book is extremely short and concise, but very thoughtfully written. As usual with Dr. Cowan, you have to play along with his metaphors, thought experiments, and come in with an open mind. I would not go around telling people "it's scientifically proven the heart is not a pump!" but it certainly gives an interesting perspective and casts doubt on our understanding of anatomy and medical science. Really warm messaging to conclude and I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Fascinating read. Learned a lot.
Interesting and factual information presented that I had never heard about before. Also this book was a reminder of how far we have strayed from actually living a real life. We have forgotten to take care of ourselves and each other and instead bombard Doctor's surgeries looking for quick fixes by way of pills. Loved this book and find the author very engaging.
