Newbies and those of you with no technical background, don't be afraid of this router ! The scarey comments here from IT guys and nerds are obsolete news. Mikrotik has added preconfigured profiles so any home user can get this router on the air in under 5 minutes! I've set up many routers in my day, and this is the easiest I've ever done. This RB951 is amazing for the price. It's commercial grade and has every feature a $1000+ router has. I bought it to use at a rental property in another state because I don't want the hassle of dealing with unreliable consumer grade garbage and wifi outage complaints from tenants. I need something reliable, and I need to securly be able to manage the router remotely. Best news is, this is easiest router I've ever set up ! A typical home user can set up the RB951 in 3 minutes start to finish ! The RB951 comes with several preset configurations to choose from. Most people would use either 'Home AP' or 'WISP AP' for slightly more advanced features and office applications. After setting up the Home AP, my messenger programs, Skype and VOIP phone traverse the NAT and firewall in the standard configuration with no problems. There was no need to set up port forwards or get a headache trying. You don't need a dual band 2/5 gHz router to stream video but if you want higher wireless speed for your LAN, Mikrotik makes one if you really want to spend the money. What you need is a router that can provide a great signal and has the engine to manage multiple high bandwidth streams simultaneously . Most consumer junk can't do this without running two bands simultaneously, but MIkrotik can. I started up multiple HD video streams from various sources on one i3 computer until I hit the bandwidth limitation of my Internet provider. They all ran smoothly and simultaneously with no choppiness or buffering. The RB951 is a workhorse and comes in a pacakge so small you won't belive all that muscle can fit inside. Signal strength is fantastic. Great product. I may never use another brand again.

I've been using Mikrotik for a while and these equipments have never failed on me! I bought it because I know how to use them, I used them before many times and they do exactly what I need, it is also a very flexible network OS (RouterOS) Now the bad news: If you don't know much about networking, if you don't care about the command line at all, if you don't like searching on internet forums and wikis for the answer to your issues, if you want any IT guy in your area to support your new Mikrotik, then I think this is not the equipment your looking for! The good news: You can always learn about networking as you start working with it, you'll be one of the few IT guys in your area that knows about it (I don't really see many Mikrotik guys around to be honest), you'll be able to ask (and answer) any question in an amazing user forum, and you'll have an awesome equipment that is as flexible as it can be for its price and size, you can pretty much do anything you want with it (networking related obviously) Another good news for the people that are not interested in networking at all: it works straight out of the box! it comes with a pre-define configuration that is pretty much the same as any other wireless router you can buy in the market and it also has a web interface to configure your wireless password and many other things. I honestly don't know why people are buying a s#$ty $150 Linksys when you can buy this beauty for half the price and get the same linksys features to the power of 10! Enjoy if you bought it, buy it if you need a good home wireless equipment!

Doubled my signal strength and speed. My Xbox was struggling with Netflix and there are cabinets and a wall between the TV area and the router. There may be others just as good but I'm unlikely to spend time trying them out. My only complaint is that it took awhile for the web based setup to make itself available. Google chrome wouldn't download it for some reason. I wound up using IE. A set up disc would have been better for someone like me. Last time I set up a router was 5 years ago. Now to see how long it lasts.

This little thing puts Linksys and netgear hardware costing three times as much to shame from a functionality perspective. The radio (signal power) is much stronger and while I had streaming problems with a $170 Linksys unit those problems instantly went away with the mikrotik. The problem was that streaming Netflix on more than one device caused all devices to get choppy and lose connection to Netflix. Here's the downside. While extremely awesome technically these microtiks are design to be used by nerds. There is a quick setup feature which gets you very close to a working network out of the box but you have to know a little about what you're doing and looking for. Things are not set up intuitivly and there's basically no documentation included with the router. There's a ton of info on the forums and wiki site on how to make this router do almost anything but make you toast but it's a lot of reading. Like I said, this device is aimed at networking professionals and nerds. If you're not in one of these two groups and you like a flashy GUI that sticks to the basics then stick to a netgear or Linksys and find another way around your signal strength and streaming issues. BTW, my organization uses mikrotik devices in third world "offices" (term used loosely) and they're beasts. We can manage them remotely, they handle heat well, they're complicated enough to keep the local office staff out and they're wonderfully customizable. We love them. But then we're both nerds and networking professionals. :)

MikroTik is one of those companies that nobody really knows about. But, once you find out about them, you never go back. They offer a several different products that share one core, RouterOS. A little bit of Googling, Forum Searching and testing configs, and you're able to setup any device they manufacture. This device, the 951Ui-2HnD, is a 5 port fast ethernet (10/100) SOHO router. It's powered by a 680MHZ Atheros MIPS CPU, and it's seldom under load, even with a bunch of clients trading packets on it. :) Hardware is rock solid, never needs to be restarted to keep working. I love that. I only wish they made cable modems. :D This (well, any MT product I've used, really) is a reliable, smooth, and excellent choice for Home WiFi. They can also be used as a bridged access point, repeater, or as a network bridge. Setups for these different options take about ten minutes, once you've got the basics of RouterOS. One thing to note is that out of the box, these devices are set to transmit at full power (1000mW). For most home users, that setting is insanely high, and can overdrive the receiving side of your laptop/phone/pc, etc. In the Wireless area, click the WiFi interface, and advanced mode. Then look for TX Power, and set it to all-rates-fixed. It defaults to 17 when you do this. Play around with this until you get strong coverage and excellent TX/RX rates. Get ya one, get nerding, and never reboot again. :)

I was looking for a quality router for a basic home wireless setup. It must be capable of working in a hot room and still having a long life. After doing some research,I decided on the MikroTik RB951Ui-2Hnd. I was apprehensive at first due as many of the reviews stated a high level of networking knowledge was needed. However, installation was a breeze as i got the router up and running in 5 minutes. The router wireless signal was extremely good as i was getting full signal through 3 solid concrete walls. I definitely recommend this router to anyone looking for a quality router. Also' once you're using it for as a basic home network, installation will not be a problem.

i don't know if anybody mentioned this but NetDuma uses these and puts their firmware into it,pretty good company.. i bought one of these because of the reviews and wanted to try something I've never seen before. it has really good QOS built in to it, I'm using it for gaming right now, works beautifully. someone said its a pretty steep learning curve but i wish regular routers (asus, linksys),had all of these settings in them. i didn't have any more problems figuring out how to set it up and get exactly what i wanted out of it than any other router. for $58 i got something that $200 routers have, which i was gonna buy but decided to try this out, what the hell ,had nothing to lose.

I've had this router now for a few months. Here are my thoughts: Setup: The MikroTik setup clearly isn't for the faint of heart. This thing exposes every option you could possibly want in the most convoluted possible way. For some bizarre reason, fairly rarely used settings like RADIUS sit at a top-level navigation item in the configuration while "everyday" things like changing the WiFi password require you to go to wireless section and then there's a "security profiles" tab where you have to create or edit a "security profile" and then you have to go back to the WiFi interfaces and then select the network you want to use (which doesn't look like a hyperlink, but it is!) and then apply the security profile you've created. Why they didn't create an option to drop a simple network key from the WiFi setup baffles me to no end. It's abstraction upon abstraction upon abstraction. But if you ever wanted to create multiple security profiles, each with separate keys, and a different cypher each with different rotation schedules, hey -- you can do that with this router. Every. Single. Networking. And. Wireless. Option. Is. Exposed. Power: This thing has a full watt of power, and it definitely feels like it. I can pick up my signal about half a block away in a dense urban location. Form factor: It's definitely not going to win any awards at an art show, but it's very functional. White and boxy means it goes just about anywhere. Vents for heat. It's got a USB port on the side. Power, PoE/Ethernet plugs are all conveniently located. Price: Great price. There are routers that are easily 2-3x the cost of this that do half as much. Overall: As others have said, this thing is a beast in terms of functionality but if you're not considering a career in networking, it may be worth spending more to get something that's easier to set up and has more common options exposed more up-front and hides away settings you'll never use.
