Beautiful and well researched book
Love this book! Books have to earn a place on the shelf these days and this title does that. It's a great addition to my embroidery book collection.

My newest favorite book on 18th century clothing/needle arts
I'm glad someone referred me to this book. I adore the 18th century--especially the clothing. And with my renewed interest in embroidery, this was the perfect choice. Photographs and line drawings are excellent, and there's a glossary to explain terminology of the craft. There are even instructions on recreating some of the stitches. Ms. Marsh's work on this volume has made me want to check into her other books on 19th and 20th century embroidery. I highly recommend this book if you're interested in this time period, the clothing and its embellishment.

Everything you need to know
Well-written survey with descriptions of how the work was done, examples of garments and stitches. Essential for anyone wanting to learn about the subject.

very well researched
For what it is, a breakdown of 18th century embroidery techniques, this is a very comprehensive book. Lots of detailed research on stitching and techiques and 18th workshop practice and tools. Not a how-to book, as such. But fascinating for anyone who loves embroidery, particularly the beautiful embroidery of the 18th century. My only real beef with this book is that there isn't a large number of photographs of original stitching and garments. A few, but the majority of the illustrations are the authors own artwork, which is fairly simple in style. I would have perferred more images and breakdowns of actual garments as this period is such a sumptuous one for beautiful fabrics and embroidery, whereas the focus of this book is mainly research orientated. Not suprising since the author states in the introduction that this is a breakdown of 10 volumes full of research that she did for a masters.

Great Pictures of the Work
184 pages of techniques, charts, explanations and everything else you need to execute these wonderful items. Most helpful if you are making a costume with the 18th Century designs. Although for costuming I think I would do the design with a computerized design sewing machine or spend months on the actual beautiful needlework. But for small garments and other bits it is worth the time for the beauty that can be created by hand.

Thorough, Beautiful, Entertaining, Informative
For the embroiderer interested in historical needlework, this book belongs in your library. It's a wonderful treatment of embroidery techniques from the 18th century. The book has a good bit of "how to" information in it - and a lot of "how they did it" information - as well as beautiful photos of 18th century needlework (especially on clothing), and many diagrams of typical designs. It's also a very readable book. The author includes historical anecdotes, excerpts of personal letters from the era, and some interesting nitty-gritty details about costs and labor. Very interesting stuff!

Best embroidery book
I love this book. I have a pretty nice collection of textile/crafting books and this is one of my favorites. The book contains textile history in an easy, readable format with not a lot of wasted jargon. The pictures are inspiring and will motivate you to re-create them. Most of the pictures/diagrams are detailed enough to help you achieve some stitching on your own. I recommend this for any needlecrafter's library.
