"The NHL in Pictures and Stories: The Definitive History" by Bob Duff and Ryan Dixon was enjoyed by a family member who loves hockey. He is older so he really liked that the chapters were by year. It starts in 1917 and it doesn't go every year (for obvious world history reasons) until about 1947 and after that, there is at least one chapter for each year. The photography is crisp. The text is easy to read. The walk down memory lane both distant and near is nostalgic and enjoyable. He loved it. Definitely a nice gift for a hockey lover in the family.

This book is very interesting, if you are an NHL fan or just casually interested in hockey this book has so much information. I thought initially it was going to be a run down of hockey with pictures and spotlights but the entire book is a spotlight for each year. starting in 1917 and going through the years until this year 2019, this book highlights an important aspect of life and hockey for that year. In 1917 it is the birth of hockey, in 1934 it is the first All Star game, in 1975 it's a New Year's to remember and in 2016 it all about Vegas. Each chapter goes into details about the specific subject and the book has photographs to enhance the story. I liked that this book was more then just your average hockey book. I got to read about much more in depth issues with the NHL that helped make hockey what it is today. There are spotlights on key players and I love that. Could it have had more photographs? sure but it was the story telling that really made this book enjoyable. I recommend this to all sports readers, NHL loves and anyone who just wants more in depth coverage of hockey and the players, coaches, rules and growth within the sport.
