Great Ark Stone!
I use this stone to sharpen my straight razors primarily and my kitchen knives secondly. So I will speak more on the straight razor department. Now for a little background info, I'm not a honemeister at all, but I've gotten some months under my belt with using this stone for setting bevels. It came really flat but I still used SiC power to double make sure it was dead flat. One side is gritted at 120, the other at 400 for a two stage bevel setting stone. It does the job well. I can't comment on if it's a better than a synthetic but I find it suits my needs just fine. For a natural stone, I prefer the Arks over the coticule for ease of use. No slurries needed, just a good oil. I've found that baby oil gives me good results. Hope this helps anyone out there in the straight razor department looking for a cheap natural to try to see if they like the stone.

Great, great stone(s)!
Dan's is the best of the Arks I have bought, and this medium can give you a very quick, non refined sharp edge! It's a fast cutter and gives you a great platform to build on. The company (the people at Dan's) is fantastic and their stones, I have found, are a better grade and are finished to a higher quality than any of the other Arkansas stones I have ever seen/bought. They cost a little more but then again, they are well worth it! Do yourself a favor and look for these if you need oil stones. I have these in medium, hard and true hard as well as the surgical black and translucent. The last two are pretty much a toss up as to which is better, were I to do it over I would just get one of those. Which one is the hard part...that's why I bought both.

Very High Quality
Very high quality Soft Arkansas Stone. Wooden box is very nice, and stone was packed inside nicely with cardboard to keep it from moving. No chips out of it anywhere, and it came with instructions as well. I am very pleased.

Perfectly flat out the box and easy to use.
A fairly small stone suited to pocket or petty knives, comes perfectly flat out of the box and is testament to the reputation of dan's whetstones quality. I'm using the stone frequently on smaller knives to put a toothy edge on before moving onto finer waterstones, though it can be said the knife is usable straight after a honing on the soft ark due to the way these amazing stones polish and sharpen at the same time. I'm currently using soap and water on mine instead of oil but will try with light honing oil to compare.
