Sickening and Beautifully Crafted
Kraus wrote a compelling story, but with captivating visuals and careful attention to detail, Shehan is the one who truly tells it. Keep your eyes peeled while pouring over every panel—there’s so much hidden in the details. Autumnal is a master class in suspenseful storytelling.

Similar To The Wicker Man, But Still Done Very Effectively
The Autumnal, although similar to The Wicker Man, had enough original twists to stand on its own. Great atmosphere and plenty of striking artwork and twists to keep any horror fan satisfied. While the art was not necessarily my taste, it was effective, consistent, and, at times, graphically shocking. Author Daniel Kraus, the co-author of George A. Romero's final novel, The Living Dead, creates a very respectable limited horror series with eight comic books that are collected in this one volume. It is a complete story and well worth getting. However, I did have two small gripes. The seven year old, Sybil, did not speak like her age at all, and, at times, seemed like college student in her wisdom and vocabulary. Also, I felt the last fifteen pages or so felt rushed, where Kraus should have taken more time to slowly wrap things up. I realize within the medium of a comic book (with the original issues) he had page limitations, but shuffling a few panels around and doing some trimming earlier would have given him the opportunity to smooth out the ending. Still, this gets a more than solid recommendation. If he is sticking with horror, I look forward to reading more of Daniel Kraus' projects.

Lingering folk horror
I'll try to avoid spoilers as much as possible so that everyone can enjoy the climbing momentum in the second half of the collection.Let's get the cons out of the way first: the dialogue feels forced and tinny in the first few issues. Kat does eventually find her voice as the series progresses, but her abrasiveness in the beginning can make her unlikeable. For the positives, this book takes a common genre and all it's expectations and twists them just enough that they feel fresh and new. The atmosphere of the small town is beautifully realized and the tension between character and caricature leaves a lasting impression.

Dark Stuff
Artwork is beautiful. Tone is great. Takes some turns you won’t see coming.

Great for the fall season but didn’t execute story well.
“All that matters is that you die and decompose, become the soil, the tree, everything…”“The Autumnal: The Complete Series” by Daniel Kraus gets a 3 out of 5 stars!Graphic novels / comics weren’t really present in my childhood; therefore, my perception of them were something adolescents age 13 and younger read. My mind immediately jumps to Marvel, DC, Archie, etc and nowhere near a horror novel. Considering it is October, the cover and the reviews, I decided to try “The Autumnal” as it felt appropriate to the season.Kat Somerville and her daughter, Sybil, head back to her hometown of Comfort Notch after receiving news that her mother passed away. Comfort Notch is the picture perfect small town that is known for having the prettiest autumn. Kat doesn’t have much memory of her life in Comfort Notch and the relationship with her mom was nonexistent after her departure. Upon their arrival, the townspeople they encounter are less than welcoming and Kat is thrown into discovering the truth of it’s haunting history before the equinox comes.Kat’s character was a difficult personality to read. She wasn’t an assertive badass (I’m assuming this is what Kraus was going for?), she was rude and always confrontational which became annoying. I had to pause a few times because it was so obnoxious. Kat and Rob’s relationship seemed cliché with the aspect of tossing sex into horror hoping it spiced up the story but actually it’s just meaningless filler scenes. Kat’s relationship with her daughter also seemed nonexistent during her quest for answers. Sybil’s level of maturity and comprehension was not befitting of her character’s dialogue. It was like a wave throughout the story and Kraus maybe thought by throwing in an SK book in the beginning would excuse that she’s only 7 years old. There’s a great story buried in “The Autumnal” but it wasn’t executed as great as I thought it would be. Best horror comic I've read in ages
Kinda blown away by this comic. It's extremely well written, subtle, yet eerie and beautiful. Was hooked by the end of chapter one. Art is haunting and brilliant, too. Massively underrated work here!

A must in your collection
I like to read comics, but not long runs. This was right up my alley, it felt as if I was watching a movie.Something that feel folkloric, with some mysteries and blood.I highly suggest it to fans of books like Wytches by Scott Snyder

Hard to get into due to the pacing
I was intrigued by a description of this book and so I picked it up on sale. I had a really hard time getting into the flow of the book because the characters acted in ways that I felt were not believable...it was very clear to me that the main character did not remember anything about why the townspeople avoided leaves and so when the townspeople attacked the protagonist or danced around the legend it was frustrating as a reader. I think I would've liked the twist ending more had I not recently read a book that had basically the same twist at the end, so it was not as shocking or fun for me. I just think there have been other comics like Harrow County or Something Is Killing the Children that work with these concepts in better ways. I will say that this would probably have been more well-suited to being a movie or miniseries.
