Q: How wide is the opening to grab an item? I am looking for something that can grab a shoebox from its shelf which is above my head.

The opening is 4 1/4 inches. Don't think that would be wide enough to grab shoe boxes?

Im lightly confused with the wording of your question, if your asking does the head rotate at 90 degree intervals, the answer is YES. If your asking if the head rotates into the shape of an "L" the answer is no. I have had this product in my tool room at work for 5 or more years. I like it so much i bought one for home. Super good product.

Yup! Since the head can be rotated 360 degrees, this grabber works really well for picking items from the floor as well as for grabbing items at waist or head level. The grabber tips are ridged rubber solidly attached to the grabber arms, a much more durable design than grabbers with suction cups at the ends (the suction cups inevitably come off). One arm has a tiny, but strong, magnet - handy for picking up paper clips or sewing pins. The trigger grip is comfortable, and the jaws open wide enough to accommodate a roll of toilet paper or paper towels. Finally, this grabber is light-weight, and built to last. I've had grabbers in every room in the house for years, mostly Ungers - they all still look like new. One note - Unger also makes a grabber with a squeeze-grip (rather than the trigger) and angled jaws (Unger 92134 36-Inch Nifty Nabber Pick-Up Tool with Aluminum Handle) that I find easier to use for items way above my head (i.e. a box of cereal or 6-pack of soda on a high kitchen cabinet shelf).
