Yes, it would be more than the seat width because you would have to accommodate the lower frame too. I measured my unit and it is 31" from the back of the metal frame to the front edge of the seat.

On each end of the table/backrest on the bench side is a spring loaded release lever. Lifting the lever allows the table to be switched between positions. It is very easy to operate.
