Bobelock 6002 Compared with Bobelock 1017
It is a great case and I am very happy with it. The green interior is not as dark as it appears in the pictures from Bobelock, but darker than the pictures I posted (at least on my computer), but still very nice, and not that almost bright green you see in many other cases.I want to compare the Bobelock 6002 to the Bobelock 1017, the next to top of the line case in the Bobelock line. I’ve had a 1017 for about ten years. There is a price difference of $65 (or more, depending on the seller). How much more case would you get if you spend the extra money, and how does Bobelock cut a pound in weight with the 6002?The materials and construction seem to be same for both cases: quality of the velvet, canvas, hardware (although the 1017 has brass compartment pulls), wall thickness of the sides, etc. The cases are almost identical in length and width (side to side across the body of the violin). The 1017 is wider from bottom of case to top the arch on the top of the case. This is the big difference: the walls of both the bottom and top halves of the 1017 are each about ¼” higher than on the 6002 > the padding surrounding the instrument is therefore ¼” shorter in the 6002 > the instrument sits a bit higher in relation to the top edge of the bottom half of the case in the 6002 > the instrument intrudes a bit more into the lid area where the bows are, and it also means there is a bit less room for the instrument to intrude into > this may not be a problem from the point of view of intrusiveness; there is room for both the instrument and the bows, but it does mean there is a bit smaller crush zone in the 6002 compared to the 1017; a bit less margin for the case to give before the bridge gets pushed into the top of the violin. In the 1017, the fiddle’s tail end sits slightly below the top of the padding, and the neck end sits flush with the top of the padding. On the 6002, the tail end is flush with the top of the padding, and the neck end is slightly above the top of the padding. The 1017 has two narrow accessory compartments, one on each side of the head of the violin, whereas the 6002 has a large open area. (Both have a large compartment, same size, at the end of the case.) In the 1017, the humistat (water bottle) is under the neck. In the 6002, the humistat is in the corner of the large open area, and you can use the space under the neck to hold even a non-collapsing shoulder rest; there is a Velcro strap to hold it in place. The ability to get a shoulder rest, whether collapsing or not, out of the big accessory compartment really frees up a lot of space for other items. The large open well of the 6002 can be used for other things, such as your cloth to wipe down the fiddle, or other items in a soft bag. (You do have a couple of Crown Royal bags laying around, don’t you?)Finally, both the 6002 and 1017 have a zippered pocket on the top that is the full size of the top. On the 1017, the pocket expands a bit more. The 1017 also has a second pocket on the top of the large pocket, which measures 8 1/2” X 15” outside dimensions. I keep my fiddle with Baggs pickup in the 1017, and use that pocket for an instrument cable and the String Swing violin and bow hanger that clamps on my mic stand. The rain flaps on the 6002 extend almost to the bottom of the side of the case; the rain flaps on the 1017 only about ¾ of the way.The additional weight of the higher sides, more expansion in the top pocket and addition of the second pocket on top is what I guess winds up making the 1017 about 1 lb. heavier than the 6002; I cannot discern what other factors make up the weight difference. Noticeable, but still only a pound: 7.5 compared with 6.5.
