Wow this book has been my saving grace for the cardiovascular unit in med school, it does an excellent job explaining the pathophysiology of the heart in a very simple and straightforward manner

Excellent book for cardio
I bought this book because I felt like I didn't really understand what exactly the different heart diseases were about (how they they arise, how they can be determined clinically and how they can be managed) from lectures and class notes. And I was very impressed with how this book filled in those gaps and much more. In general, a chapter is broken down to the physiology, pathophysiology and finally treatment/management of a particular disease process such as Hypertension or Heart Failure. It does an EXCELLENT job of explaining heart sounds and ECGs particularly because each of these topics have an introductory chapter discussing the fundamental concepts and an additional chapter or two on the various disease processes. For instance, there's a chapter on the basics of ECGs, a second chapter devoted to how arrhythmias form, and another on the clinically important arrhythmias. This book however, isn't going to help with pathology but it I don't think it's meant to.Bottom line: if you aren't satisfied with the way cardiovascular physiology is taught in school get this!

Probably one of the best cardiology texts out there
I originally bought this for my cardiology block during MS2. This was an amazing book that covered just about everything I needed to know about cardiology, but also provided the basic science and mechanisms of the disease process. It was a relatively easy read. I love this book because I didn't really have to memorize everything anymore; once I picked up on the logic of how the heart works and what can go wrong, you can figure out just about everything from that. The one issue I have is that the coverage of ECGs was more limited than I had wanted. I would Rapid Interpretations of ECGs by Dale Dubin for that.I also used this during my acute coronary block during MS3, which was extremely helpful. Certainly, doesn't provide all the treatment regimens like specific doses, but it provided me with a very good understanding of the mechanisms and also helped me a lot with some of the more obscure pimping questions.

Great for chiropractors
I bought an older version of this book after reading it in Palmer's school library. It followed the CVP lecture fairly close and explained many topics much more clear than the instructor's own text. It was a great addition that augmented lectures and made key items easy to understand. I have recommended this text to other chiropractic students because it's an easy read, not bogged down in minute details yet able to explain heart sounds, basic EKG, ionic channels, and so forth (ie, makes points clear), and doesn't weigh much in your back pack.

Must-have for med school
Got this for my first-year cardio module but I've continually referred back to it throughout rotations and recommended it to all the younger students I've advised. All the information is clinically relevant and clearly presented with helpful diagrams/tables including a section of sample EKGs and real chest x-rays. I also appreciate how they include a list of references at the end of each chapter if you want to do additional reading in the primary literature. It can be vague about treatment details, but specific guidelines change a lot and each patient has unique requirements so you should look those up anyway.

Complete
Most of what I learned in Cardio, I owe to this book. Would love it if the texts for each of the systems went into this kind of detail for the pathophysiology concepts as this book does. This book does assume that you already understand basic cardio physiology, so make sure you either know it or look at Mohrman's text for basic physio.

If a book can dumb down things for me to be able to understand ...
As a medical student we need to learn so much information in a very short amount of time. If a book can dumb down things for me to be able to understand better I am eternally grateful. This is exactly what this book does. Everyone in my class used it, it was the only book we all bought because it was just that good.

Well organised and explained
This textbook should be essential for every medical student on their cardiology rotation. It explains concepts so clearly that even students as thick as me can understand concepts that may seem confusing. It even has a chapter on investigagtions and the longest chapter is on drugs - about 50 pages. Understanding is the key to remembering facts and you will realise how little you know once you've read this book.I even bought it for a friend when she began her cardiology rotation. If there is anything that ever confuses you in cardio, read this book and you'll get ti sorted out in no time.Of course, it is lacking on the clinical side, so I would suggest you refer to other texts for that. After all, this is entitled "pathophysiology".

The beginners guide to cardiology
This is an absolutely superb book. I'm a second year medical student at UEA, just started my cardiology unit, and I've found it gives me just the right amount of detail about everything I need to know. It's chapter on ECGs is especially helpful and allowed me to get to grips with that usually quite difficult part of cardio very quickly. It's easy to read and is great as a reference text and as a main study text. A must-buy for all medical students.
