(Summer Learning HeadStart by Lumos Learning): 9781940484716: Learning, Lumos, Summer Learning HeadStart, Lumos: Books Review: Easy to break down by day so you child knows exactly what to do - Great option for the summer . Quick, engaging , and helps prepare for the next year Review: Nice book - This just arrived today and I haven’t had a chance to use it with my child yet; however, I have looked through it. From what I see, I love this book. Unlike other books that have a section for math, a section for reading, a section for language arts, etc, this has a math practice and reading practice together and the book is arranged by week & day (so week 1 day 1 has a few math problem’s and a reading section. Looks to be maybe 15 - 20 minutes of work a day for the average kid. Enough to maintain skills without feeling like they’re losing their summer break. And much easier than having to flip to different sections of the book to practice different subjects. Update: roughly 3 weeks into using this book, my daughter also loves it as she can grab it and know exactly what she needs to do each day even if I’m busy. As far as some reviews that there’s no lesson teaching the concepts.... no there isn’t, but this book should be a REVIEW of skills they already learned so they don’t forget the skills. I appreciate there not being a lesson / example so I can easily see what my daughter may be rusty on and need some more practice (if there was a lesson / reminder on the page, she’d likely be able to follow it to get the 4 problems correct but not really know how to do it on her own)

It’s ok
Nice book, as a kid who’s learning out of this before middle school (the main audience) I can say that you really need to figure some things out yourself. It doesn’t explain anything on the pages.

Our child loves this workbook
Historically, we've been unsuccessful with academic workbooks. We research, purchase, and entice our children to complete them, however shortly after the workbook comes home, it begins collecting dust. Lumos Learning's Summer learning HeadStart is the first workbook we are about to finish! Why I think it may be working: our child actually likes it. Visually, it's laid out in such a way that there are only a few questions per page, which eases her fears of being "overwhelmed" with work. As a result, she ends up spending more time completing her work and gives each question more attention then she would if there were 20 problems per page. Additionally, she enjoys the feeling of accomplishment of being able to "flip" to the next bank of questions after only having to tackle 3-4 problems. She praises the book's clarity. She likes how the questions are phrased in a way that she can understand. Each challenge is worded directly and simply. Lastly, she loves the multiple choice options versus "fill-in." While multiple choice may feel like cheating over having to fill-in answers, I'm okay with it. The fact that she is interested and enjoys completing her work is a huge win.

Great Middle School Prep
I was stunned that my granddaughter had not learned some of the math in this book. She didn't even have the multiplication table memorized (public school)! We used this book over the summer between 5th and 6th grade and it helped her prepare for Middle School. She protested summer learning, hard, but she has thanked me since she went back to school and was able to keep up in class. (She actually called and thanked me for forcing her to study last summer!) She's now on the honor roll and excelling in all her classes. Proud Grandma here. I did incentivize my granddaughter to spend time learning over the summer, I'm not too proud to use a little bribery. I did tutor her one-on-one, we went over every question and answer that she got wrong together, and it was great bonding time. So the book works, but the patience and attention matter too. The book offers a lot of resources in addition to the workbook, so others may find that helpful too. I highly recommend!

Not thoroughly edited, but overall good
The math and ELA questions are a good fit for my rising sixth grader, but one or two of the questions in any week's worth are either not correct or don't have anything to do with the passage. One passage was about a doctor visiting a woman, but the first question asked about ostriches. We just make fun of it when it happens and move on, but it would be nice if all the questions were proofread and edited better.

Great to make up for the missed school year! Love that it is divided up into daily activities.

I am a teacher using these to prevent the summer slide of my children. I have found multiple errors with these books. There are many syntax errors, and questions that don't match the reading content.

I bought this for my child as I did not want her to fall behind this summer in learning. She is actually in grade 4 but a very advanced student. I like how the book was broken down into weeks and days to give us activities on a timeline and also the variety of materials included. The price was reasonable too. Very happy with this book!
