Back to Barsoom
Nice to see eight issues collected in this volume, instead of six like in volume one. The clothing standards have changed from the earlier Foxborn editions of ERB books published by Dynamite and the graphic violence has been toned down a little, but this is a welcome addition to the John Carter canon. The writer stays true to the world of Barsoom and the illustrations accurately represent the characters. Exciting, fast moving, and worth your time.

A Burroughs Bargain
This is the second volume in Dynamite's now fully authorized continuation of Edgar Rice Burroughs John Carter of Mars. It collects issues #7 through #14. That is eight full issues for a list price of $19.99 , the same price as the first volume which only contained six issues. If you bought the eight single issues it would cost almost $32. And you would only get one cover each. This volume contains all eight regular covers plus a gallery in the back with 24 different alternate covers.Writing this volume again is famed comic writer Ron Marz. Joining Ron with issue #8 is Ian Eddington. Ian was a colleague of Ron's from his CrossGen days. They previously collaborated on Sojourn.New to the book is artist Ariel Medell. Ariel is a new discovery from Mexico who has gone on to the Xena comic after this book ended. His style is better then average and improving. My favorite of the many cover artists included here is Brazilian Ed Benes. The eight issues pick up right after the previous volume but you do not have to have read that one to enjoy this one. Issue #7 begins with John Carter and Dejah Thoris leaving Helium for a combination of Scientific Exploration and relaxing getaway. The eight issues that follow are all adventures that take place on that trip. You get two 2 parters and four single issue stories that all conclude in issue #14 when our heroes return home to Helium. In issue #7 as the duo camp in a cave, Warhoons attack. John is drugged and it is up to Dejah to save the day.Issues #8 and #9 titled Man-Made Monster starts with a rural Martian community being subjected to weird Thoat mutilations. Then we meet the Hormad. Patchwork Monsters from the Burroughs novel The Chessmen Of Mars.In #10 we have a departure from our main narrative as Tharks around a campfire hear a story about the legend of Tars Tarka. John and Deja only make a cameo of the last panel of the story.Issues #11 and #12 titled Lost Empires is the other two parter with John and Dejah Thoris discovering the last remaining Orovar. A ancient society extinct centuries ago.In #13 the heroes encounter their old enemy The Plant Men. While #14 brings back the Hormad and their scientist creator Ras Thavas.Unfortunately this was the last issue of the ongoing series, but Dynamite cancels books often and brings them back later with new renumbering. So please encourage Dynamite to continue John Carter Warlord Of Mars by purchasing these trades.

Not sold on this
I’m not sure that I’m ever going to get into this series. Much as I looked forward to reading this series, it felt like it lacked depth. Depth of storyline and dialogue. I literally struggled to finish both volumes 1 & 2.
